Heartworms are a danger to your pet year round. Heartworms are contracted through infected mosquitos. Heartworms infect your pet's lungs and heart. In the early stages, your pet may show few to no symptoms; but as the disease progresses, the more likely symptoms will start to show. "Signs of heartworm disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss," (American Heartworm Society). Heartworms can be deadly if untreated.
The best ways to protect your pets against heartworms is to get them tested annually and to remain on heartworm prevention year round.
Is your pet up-to-date on their prevention? Has it been awhile since your pet has been tested for heartworms? Contact our office today and our staff will be happy to help!

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month. Did you know that mosquitoes are present all year round?! Heartworms are not just a threat in the warmer months but every month of the year. Now that the weather is heating up, mosquitos will be more common and just 1 mosquito that is infected can cause harm to many pets.
Is your pet a mostly or strictly an indoor pet? Just because they remain indoors does not mean that they are safe from heartworms. Isn't it common, especially during these warmer months, that you find that those outside pests have made their way into your home somehow?! By simply opening your front door or your garage, you could unknowingly welcome one or more inside. Once they are there, they can stay for months.
Keeping your pet protected year round with prevention is the best way to shield them from heartworms.

Spring is here! Something to keep in mind on these warm weather days is knowing if your pet is up-to-date on their flea, tick, and heartworm prevention!!
Fleas, ticks, and heartworms are actually present all year round and can cause harm to your pet any month of the year. That's why, we highly encourage all pet owners to keep your pet on their flea, tick, heartworm prevention year round.
Fleas can spread disease, infest your home, and leave your pet (and even you) very itchy and even lead to skin infections.
Ticks can carry disease as well that can be spread to your pet but also you.
Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes and are very dangerous and even deadly for your pet. Heartworm prevention year round is the number one way to keep your pet protected.
The best way to protect your pet, your home, and you is to keep your pet on preventions year round and take a good look over your pet when they come in from outside to make sure they aren't carrying any unwelcome guests in with them.
Is your pet up-to-date on their preventions? Contact our office today and we will be happy to share more information with you on how to get them updated and protected.

The warmer days often mean more time outside for us and our furry family members. Something to keep in mind as we all make our way back outside is knowing if your pet is updated on their vaccines.
Leptospirosis (AKA- Lepto) is an infectious bacterial disease that can affect humans and animals. In animals, Leptospirosis can cause liver and kidney failure.
Lepto is spread through infected water or liquid. Your dog can become infected by simply drinking out of a puddle, a bird bath, or even a bowl that has become infected from other wildlife. The best way to prevent your pet from this disease is by vaccinating them annually; especially if you spend time outside pretty often.
Is your pet up-to-date on the Lepto vaccine? Unsure? Call our office today at 828-667-0247!!

April is Lyme prevention awareness month in dogs. Yesterday, we learned that Lyme disease causes joint pain, red blood cell problems, and even kidney failure. The best way to protect your pet is by getting them vaccinated for Lyme disease annually AND by keeping them on their flea, tick, & heartworm prevention all year long. โ€œThousands of cases of Lyme disease have been reported each year in humans and animals across the U.S. and around the world. By knowing about Lyme disease and how to prevent it, you can help keep everyone in your household safe,โ€ (AVMA).
Annual blood work has many useful aspects but one of them is to be able to see if your pet โ€œ... has been exposed to Borrelia bacteria by measuring antibodies against the bacteria,โ€ (AVMA). Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose based on symptoms; a positive test result is helpful in a diagnosis but it does not necessarily mean that itโ€™s Lyme disease that is present in the pet. Some more common symptoms are when a pet starts experiencing generalized pain, is not wanting to eat, or maybe even limping. โ€œMost dogs infected with the Lyme disease organism take two to five months before they show symptoms. By this time, the disease may be widespread throughout the body,โ€ (VCA).
The most standard treatment for Lyme disease is with antibiotics; however, pets can become re-infected or the initial infection can recur (VCA).

As we have warmer days, we will be spending more time outside and that often means our dogs will be joining us. With more time outside comes more interaction with pests such as ticks. Make no mistake, ticks can be found year round but they are most common in our area from April-October.
Ticks carry Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease causes joint pain, red blood cell problems, and even kidney failure. You can protect your dog by getting them vaccinated for Lyme disease annually and staying up to date on their flea, tick, & heartworm prevention all year long.

As March is coming to a close, we want to focus on another common space within our homes that all of the members of the family frequent, the living room.
The living room is one of the most trafficked areas of the home and our furry family members are no exception. Continue to be mindful of the different products, foods, medications, and plants that might be around your home and what is safe and what is not safe for your pet.

This month, we are focusing on keeping your pet safe from different toxins. Today, we're focusing on what can be found in the basement and garage. Many times, our furry family members follow us down to the basement when we go to do laundry or out to the garage while we're working on something. To help keep them safe, keep an eye on your pet and know what is within their reach and what could be poisonous to them.

This month is Poison Prevention Month and today, we are highlighting a poison for our pets that hides in many of the items we use or eat daily! Xylitol is often found in food but can also be found in medications, dental products, and even personal care products. If a pet ingests Xylitol, their body rapidly absorbs it and drastically changes your pet's blood sugar levels. This is an emergency and your pet would need to be seen by a veterinarian immediately.
