Day 2 of Layla's Boot Camp. She's quickly learning that structure equals comfort. As long as we communicate clearly and consistently we can teach anxious dogs like Layla to relax.

When you have poor communication with your dog it can almost ruin your relationship with them. Be clear, consistent and fair.

Correct the dog for behavior you don't want and reward for behavior you do want. It's that simple

Some dogs have issues with emotional regulation. The challenge is teaching the dog how to go from extreme emotional peaks. They swing wildly into fight or flight mode but with appropriate expectations they can better cope with stimulation in their environment.

Anyone can teach a dog sit, down and stay. Teach your dog how to be calm in many situations.

When I train clients that have a new puppy of course I'm going to teach commands such as sit, down, come, crate, place and so on but the most important thing to teach is that being still is a rewardable event in the dog's life. It provides structure and order in a world that they don't understand much of. Teaching a dog how to be calm when there is distractions creates a giant advantage whereas your dog will have more freedom simply because they can keep their emotions under control.

Dogs don't come with instruction manuals so learning how to correct a dog, enforce structure and boundaries is needed for every dog owner. They are very basic and simple things you can do that can teach your dog how to follow rules consistently so that they know what their expectations are, what their behavior should be and what your relationship with them is. Training is more than sit down and stay.

Habits, routines, consistency, expectations supervision and your relationship are all formed with structure.
