🐾 Socialization Sunday 🐾
Let’s talk about what socialization actually means.
Socialization does NOT mean:
• Letting your dog meet every dog
• Playing with every dog at the park
• Greeting every person on a walk
• Constant stimulation
True socialization means teaching your dog how to be calm and neutral in the presence of the world around them.
It means:
• Walking past other dogs without reacting
• Sitting calmly while people move around
• Observing new environments without becoming overwhelmed
• Trusting their human to handle the situation
A well-socialized dog is not the most outgoing dog in the room.
It’s the dog who can calmly coexist.
Many reactivity issues start when dogs are taught that they are responsible for every interaction. When we shift that responsibility back to the handler and teach neutrality instead, dogs relax.
Confidence grows.
Anxiety decreases.
Behavior improves.
This week, instead of focusing on how many interactions your dog has… focus on how calmly they can observe the world.
Calm exposure > chaotic exposure.
