Ok ok, I know I said this a while ago! But then y'all sent all your friends my way (THANK YOU! ๐Ÿ˜‰), and I've been covered up ever since. Pack walks and Drop-ins will probably share a time slot and alternate weeks. Unfortunately, I don't think I will have a weekend time slot for these, so I'm sorry to all the people that work week days.

I'm excited to get these going again! Mutty Waters is in good shape for classes, and I think there are a few places in the area where we can walk as a pack!

Drop-Ins: These are group classes held at my farm in Green Mountain. This is not a series, so you can sign up for as many as you want, one by one. Each week will have a topic that we will work on. The goal is to improve skills and have the dogs work with the distraction of the group. We take lots of sniff breaks but the dogs will not interact directly.

Pack walks: This is a casual group walk with our dogs! The purpose is the get the dogs calm and comfortable walking beside each other. There is very little direct interaction, and no pressure for your dog to have any interaction at all. These will be held at local parks and trails.

Stay tuned for specific times!

Update on the Rhodi drama! We have successfully prevented ANY more altercations. Rhodi and Minnow are almost back to their old selves.

Rhodi is an adolescent dog. We have to remember that dogs don't go straight from puppyhood to adulthood. Adolescence can be a real roller coaster! Remember slamming your door in your parents' faces when you were 13? Was that a true representation of your temperament? For me it surely was not. After being a little monster during adolescence (at times), I turned into a peaceful and frankly conflict-avoidant adult.

The trick is to not let these behaviors "stick". If dogs learn that aggressive outbursts get them was they want, they can absolutely carry those behaviors into their adult years.

For now, we manage it, we repair their relationship, and we teach Rhodi slowly what is appropriate.

Making lemonade, as they say.

In the name of social media transparency, I wanted to share more about our journey with Rhodi! Although it has been almost entirely pure bliss, no dog (or person) is perfect.
Rhodi has some resources guarding issues of the couch and of me, at times. We're working through it and honestly, we hadn't seen any outbursts or even tension for weeks.
But three days ago, Rhodi started a fight with my beloved Minnow. It was intense, but brief because I was right there to put a stop to it. Although the fight wasn't bad... it really hurt their relationship. For 24 hours, Minnow would not go near her. They are now back to playing, but there are moments of tension and a severe lack of trust. If you know me, you know I personally am sensitive about conflict in my pack for a reason.
This was upsetting and surprising considering how well everything was going. I believe Rhodi was trigger stacked from an exciting week and I also believe she is younger than we thought and only now entering the throes of adolescence. We are putting structure and management in place to make sure this doesn't happen again and will do whatever it takes to work through it.
I'm sharing this because I think often times on social media, people make everything seem effortless and amazing, even when they are struggling. Dogs are complex animals and managing a multi-dog house hold can be hard. Adolescent dogs can be hard. Female dogs can be hard ๐Ÿ‘€
There are cases in which two female dogs decide they don't like each other as they come into adulthood. Sometimes there is nothing that can be done. Minnow and Rhodi are on their way back to being BFFs and I don't think that is what we're dealing with. But these are the risks we take when we bring dogs into our families. They are not robots or toys, they are thinking, sentient creatures that have minds of their own.
Enjoy the ride.

If three is a crowd... then four is what exactly? ๐Ÿ˜…

Happy to have the added chaos of Layla added in this week. I really think it's good for my dogs to have to navigate the extra social complexity. She is a great dog and pleasure to have around, but it does add extra work and management to our load of course!

Just because Minnow hasn't been featured on my socials lately, doesn't mean she isn't still my perfect little sweet baby coyote soul sister. She is happier than ever having her own little sister to chew on, even if it means less time on the gram.
