When we moved we brought the base to The Boone Saloon with us.

The roof had started rotting so we removed it and as silly as it may sound to some, I could not part with the base of Boone's Saloon.

The Boone Saloon held so many memories. At the time it felt like we were saying goodbye to way too many memories. I wanted to hold on to what I could. We packed up what remained of Boone's Saloon.

Yesterday I transformed the base into a perch for The Luka's.

They've been wanting a perching spot. Especially Taela and Stella.

I screwed 2 x 4's to the top and I padded them.

If Luka decides he wants to perch, I wanted the perches to be padded for his foot.

It is no surprise to me that Taela is the first to check out their new perching spot. ❤️

I knew Luka, Stella and Taela would be excited about their mulch, but I underestimated how excited they would actually be.

They were ecstatic!

They scritched, scratched and spoke happy talk as mulch was flying all over the place!

I let them have their space as they enjoyed their over the moon mulch excitement.

When I went back to check on them, they had dug out a bathing spot and were enjoying a dust bath together.

It was their first family bath together.

Did I get emotional about it?

You better believe I did!

My heart was full seeing them so happy.

Today is their two week anniversary of arriving to their sanctuary home. ❤️

This morning we received a donation (thank you Pam ❤️) that helped us reach the goal for Luka, Stella and Taela's Attached Run Project!

Thank you so much to everyone that helped make this possible for them!!!

Today I got 50' of fencing put up!

While I was working they were very curious about what I was doing. Especially Taela. She kept standing at their run door watching me work. I told them many times that this space is going to be for them.

I have no doubts that they know it too. I could see their understanding, of what's going on, in their eyes.

I truly cannot thank you enough for caring about them and for making this new space happen for them. They are going to love it so much. I can't wait for it to be finished.

Today was a big start!

It's not related to the fundraiser, but this afternoon the mulch got delivered.

Although it's not related to the fundraiser, being able to provide them with substrate is because of your donations.

You're support helps the chickens more than you may know.

Thank you for loving them and caring about them.

Thank you for helping me to be able to provide them with the life they always dreamed about.

Tomorrow I'll be putting down a nice thick layer of mulch in Luka, Stella and Taela's run.

They're going to love it!

Cyana is one example of how chickens are viewed because of exploitation.

In 2019 our local shelter messaged me about Cyana.

Animal control took her to the shelter after she was found on the side of a road.

She had been attacked by a predator and required medications.

Because of the medications she was on, her eggs could not be eaten for a few weeks.

Because of this she was considered to be unadoptable.

The shelter reached out to us because they knew we were vegan.

Even in an animal shelter environment, chickens are viewed as someone who is exploitable.

I'm so grateful they reached out to us.

Cyana had severe PTSD from her attack and needed a safe, patient and loving space where she could heal emotionally from her traumatic experience.

We absolutely adore her and love her so much.

Nothing is wanted from her except for her to feel safe, loved and respected.

Last week I ordered a small gazebo for The Luka's run. The big one I had in their run took up too much space. It got delivered yesterday. Today I took out the big bulky gazebo and replaced it with their new small gazebo.

There's work I need to do in Luka, Stella and Taela's run. Now that their small gazebo opens up more space, it gives them the room they need so I can start redesigning enrichment for them. Taela and Stella are craving being able to perch. Putting in a couple of perching spots for them is the first thing I need to figure out for them.

Luka, Stella and Taela dug up the grass in their run. The ground that's left is not good for Luka's foot, so today Donna and I went to our local gardening/mulch store. I placed an order for mulch. It will be delivered tomorrow afternoon. I wanted to go in person to see if there was another option of mulch that would be even softer than the kind that I regularly order. There wasn't so I stuck with the double ground hardwood. There will be enough left, after I fill their run, to share with Jackson. Jackson is due for mulch in his run too.

I talk a lot (so Mike says 😄), but I actually started this post to say thank YOU and update you on Luka, Stella and Taela's attached run fundraiser.

With donations outside of FB and from their FB fundraiser, they've raised $497.00!!! Part of that number includes the plastic needed to wrap their run for the winter. Someone who is always so kind to us reached out to me, ordered the plastic for us and it got delivered last night!

I was able to order fencing earlier this week, thanks to PayPal donations. It arrived today!

I'll be putting in an order for pavers, hardware cloth and getting the lumber needed to build their door.

The Luka's Attached Run Project is happening and it's all thanks to your donations and generosity! This is HUGE! They are going to be soooooo happy to have yard space to explore!

We are only $53.00 from this project's goal!

When Luka arrived, his bumble foot was back.

Every morning Donna comes over to help me.

I hold Luka while she soaks his foot, applies ointment and wraps it.

He's been really good about it and I am so grateful for her help.

After we finished his soak and wrap this morning, we decided it was time to take the leg bands off of Stella and Taela.

Stella and Taela don't like being picked up. They yell and fly in fear if they think I'm going to pick them up.

This morning they did just that and Luka didn't like it.

He didn't go after us, but he was thinking about it.

He was worried we were going to hurt the girls.

We got their leg bands off and all was well.

I visited The Luka's lots of times today, with treats, and spent time sitting in their run with them.

I don't want Luka to ever think I'd do anything to hurt their family.

Donna and I remind Luka, Stella and Taela often that no one is ever going to hurt them again.

The shade cloths are off of the runs!

When Mike gets home, I'll ask him to help me fold them and they'll be packed away for next summer.

The shade cloths were donated to the chickens this summer.

It was the hottest and most brutal summer I've ever experienced in my 56 years of life.

Unlike our old place, we have no shade in the yard here.

The shade cloths were a total life saver for the chickens. They shaded their spaces perfectly.

The chickens and I thank you Wendy and Amy.

Not the greatest photo, but it's the sweetest sight.

For the last couple of evenings, Luka has been letting the girls know when it's time for bed.

He goes in the coop and does the sweetest talk.

Stella and Taela listen to him and they go in the coop and get themselves tucked into bed.

Luka stands guard in front of them until I go in, shut the coop door and lock it up for the night.

Watching these three become a family is heartwarming.

It's all I've wanted for them, even before they arrived here.

For two months this is what I wished for them.

The wish came true.
