Hey local dog parents! 👋
Walking your pup should be fun for both of you — but these common mistakes can turn a relaxing stroll into a frustrating tug-of-war. As your local dog walker, I see them every day. Here are the top 3 and simple fixes that actually work:

Letting your dog pull like a sled dog
Mistake: You follow when they pull, which accidentally rewards the behavior.
Fix: The moment the leash tightens, stop walking completely. Wait for your dog to come back to your side with a loose leash, then praise and keep going. Practice “red light, green light” — it teaches them that loose leash = forward movement!
Rushing the walk with no sniffing time
Mistake: Treating the walk like a race instead of letting your dog “read the newspaper” with their nose.
Fix: Build in short sniffing breaks every few minutes. A good walk is part exercise AND mental stimulation. Try 5 minutes of structured walking + 2 minutes of free sniffing.
Not checking in with your dog (or watching where you're going!)
Mistake: Staring at your phone or letting your dog lead while you zone out.
Fix: Hold the leash in the hand opposite your dog, stand tall, look forward, and reward them with treats or praise when they glance up at you. This builds trust and makes walks calmer and safer.
