SURF COACH TAKES BELOVED DOG BACK TO THE OCEAN FOR ONE FINAL GOODBYE AFTER YEARS SPENT BESIDE HIM ON THE BEACH
For years, when people arrived on the beaches of Costa Rica nervous about learning to surf, there was often someone waiting to welcome them.
His name was Thai.
The dog belonged to surf coach Diego Jimรฉnez, but over the years, he became much more than one man's pet.
Thai became part of the surfing community that surrounded Diego.
While lessons took place in the water, Thai would wait on the sand.
He greeted beginners.
He watched surfers paddle out.
And when they returned after catching a wave, he was there waiting for them.
According to Diego, Thai seemed to have a special ability to recognize people who needed a little extra comfort.
"He knew exactly who needed a friend that day," Diego later wrote.
For many people who learned to surf with Diego, memories of the experience also became memories of Thai.
But after years spent together beside the ocean, Diego eventually had to say goodbye to his best friend.
Thai died in early August 2026.
The loss left Diego facing the kind of goodbye every dog owner knows will eventually come, but is never really prepared for.
Two days later, he returned to the place that had meant so much to them.
The ocean.
Friends and people who had loved Thai gathered in the water for a final farewell.
It was the same place where Thai had spent years watching Diego surf and teach.
The same waves he had watched countless beginners attempt for the first time.
And the same beach where he had quietly become a friend to people who arrived as strangers.
Diego later shared footage from the farewell along with a tribute to the dog who had spent those years beside him.
He remembered Thai welcoming nervous students, waiting patiently on the beach and celebrating when surfers returned from their waves.
But Diego's memories went far beyond surf lessons.
Thai had been his companion through ordinary days, sunsets and countless hours beside the sea.
In his farewell, Diego thanked everyone who had loved Thai, cared for him and played with him over the years.
He also wrote that he would remember his best friend in every wave, every sunset, the sea and the beach they had shared together.
Thai may have belonged to Diego.
But judging by the messages that followed his death, a little piece of him belonged to many of the people who had met him too.
For years, Thai stood on the shore while people paddled into the ocean and eventually found their way back to him.
He welcomed them when they were nervous.
He celebrated when they succeeded.
And somehow, Diego said, he knew when someone simply needed a friend.
When it was finally time to say goodbye to Thai, Diego took him back to the place where so many of those memories had begun.
The beach was still there.
The waves were still coming in.
But this time, Diego's best friend wouldn't be waiting for him on the sand.
From now on, he'll have to find Thai somewhere else.
In every wave.
Every sunset.
And every memory they left behind beside the sea
