We lost a large oak during a storm today. George called it the Art Thomas oak. Art was a local teacher and fox hunter. He and George would stand at the tree and listen to the hounds run.

Karen Diaz, Dean of Libraries, has published the highlights of what WVU Libraries accomplished in the 2017-2018 academic year. The George Bird Evans Digital Collection was included in the report. If you would like to read GBE's journals, go to this link. https://gbe.lib.wvu.edu/ Currently, the directors of the Old Hemlock Foundation is funding via AmeriCorps with the WVU Libraries the transcription of the journals into editable text.

As we remember all of those who have given for our freedoms, I remember an annual event when Helen Ann and I joined George and Kay on Memorial Day to walk along Little Sandy Creek to admire the blooming Pink Lady Slippers and the Natural World.

Beautiful weather today was spent picking up someone else's litter! Please help keep Old Hemlock and WV Highways free of litter.

I have mixed feelings with this post. At least three times a year, we schedule a litter clean up at Old Hemlock to remove litter from 2 miles of highway which bisects Old Hemlock. This year we scheduled in conjunction with the WV Adopt a Highway state-wide effort and WVU's Athletes Day of Service. Ten members of the WVU Swim Team and a Graduate Assistant helped Ian Gray and me pick up 23 bags of litter. Kudos to these young men and women for giving to their community and to assist keeping the highways clean through Old Hemlock. Sadly, this should not be a problem. There is no reason for anyone to toss litter from their vehicle. Thanks to the student athletes we are litter free today.

This morning the Stragetic Communications students, Hannah and Victoria, presented their final summary of their work with the Old Hemlock Foundation. I was impressed with their professionalism and sense of design.

Shawn Strosnider

Shawn Strosnider is a volunteer from the local carpenter's union. He has been a great asset to Old Hemlock Foundation. He is a reader of George Bird Evans. When a WVU students, Hannah Belt and Victoria Price, ask him what Old Hemlock means to him, I thought his answer was "Right On Target/"

The Hooded Warblers will be returning to Old Hemlock in the next month. This one of the three most commonly captured birds in our Monitoring Productivity and Survivorship banding program here.
Several birds captured in 2018 were banded here in 2016. They have a strong site fidelity.

Our latest Bird of the Week is a handsome mix of yellow and olive with large black eyes, and males sporting a black balaclava throughout the year. After a winter down south, with males and females living in different habitats, it's on its long migration across the Gulf of Mexico, back to breeding grounds in eastern North America. Look for it flashing its white tail feathers in the understory of forests—studies have shown that this may help capture insect prey, perhaps by startling them into flight. Males sing slightly different songs that they use to recognize neighbors, which may minimize time spent on territorial defense. Have you seen a Hooded Warbler lately?

We are excited to be hosting our Spring Season Work Day on April 13 from 9 a.m. to noon! Volunteers from the community will be coming together to support our Foundation. All are welcome to attend. We hope to see you there!

Contact LeJay Graffious, director, at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer.

Editor Note: This day of service is being planned by two WVU students in Dr. Oppe's 315 Strategic Communications class. They wrote this post and are making campus flyers. I will post the flyers when I receive it. All are welcome, not just students.

Over the weekend, we played host to several members of Alpha Phi Omega's Lambda Omicron service chapter from WVU and several local AmeriCorps Members who helped give the house a through spring cleaning and dusted down a significant collection of artifacts and books.

Many thanks to those who gave some of their weekend to preserving the legacy of George and Kay!

I had the pleasure of meeting 20 young women from Alma Colllege in Michigan. They are members of the Alma College women's lacrosse team. They are playing in Waynesburg tomorrow and gave an afternoon of service at Old Hemlock today. I shared the story of George and Kay, and the Old Hemlock Setters with them, Then after lunch they helped clean up debris from the weekend wind storm. Through leadership of Coach Ashley Johnson the program was recently presented with the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Team Community Awareness Award for NCAA Division III,

We get the chance to meet many wonderful WVU students through relationships the Old Hemlock Foundation has through the various colleges and departments at WVU. Tim Eads volunteered at Old Hemlock last semester and we recognized him as a leader. We were excited this evening to hear that Tim was selected to represent WVU and State of WV as the next Mountaineer. Congratulations to Tim.
His grit, enthusiasm, personally and intellect will make us proud. Read more about Tim, https://wvutoday.wvu.edu/stories/2019/02/26/eads-named-wvu-s-66th-mountaineer-mascot?fbclid=IwAR1PCuI-hxkX32ZAUB-DU4Pkz4u3tPHKGkAie0SW6OIjlICPb7AQFXOAqN0

Bats have been very rare at Old Hemlock in recent years. I see a few on an irregular basis in the summer. So I was quite pleased when I found Little Brown Bats hibernating in the spring house. Their population has plummeted due to the introduction of a fungus called White-nose Syndrome. Read more about it at https://www.whitenosesyndrome.org/static-page/what-is-white-nose-syndrome
