We continue the tradition of George ringing in the New Year at Old Hemlock except now it can be heard around the world.

Best Wishes from the OHF Directors! We hope your 2020 is filled with lots of joy, laughter, and good cheer.

George and Kay had the tradition of ringing in the New Year with the dinner bell on their spring house. May your 2020 be filled with setters and game birds.

WVU Core Arboretum, Mountaineer Chapter of National Audubon and Old Hemlock Bird Observatory held a children's Christmas Bird Count. We had nine young birders and their parents participate. The highlights were Hannah Clipp's WVU Wildlife Class sharing some birds from their banding class with the children, everyone got great looks of a male Bufflehead on the river and two Bald Eagles flying overhead at the end of our walk.

Old Hemlock has Chestnuts Trees from the American Chestnut Foundation planted on Old Hemlock plus an information display.. Check out this video from a CBS report.

More than a century ago, nearly 4 billion American chestnut trees grew in the eastern U.S., dominating forests from Maine to Florida. Wood logged from the massive trees helped build the country and was used in everything from homes to railroad ties. Its famous chestnuts fed animals and people. Then,...

Five WVU students helped with the roadside cleanup today. We appreciated their support on Old Hemlock and keeping our area free of litter. In addition, three Neighbors assisted with the installation of deer exclusion fence to protect our shrubbery. The encouraging aspect of the day was we only picked up 13 bags of litter. Today was less than of a third of our last Adopt-A-Highway day. Every time has been less.

Hi everyone! Jamie here! I found this quote while going through October Fever, and I thought for quite a bit of time about it. It is so important to encourage loyalty and, in turn, trust with our companions. I'm raising a little Beagle mix myself and in the year I've had him I really feel this quote rings true. Encouraging him to follow commands, and then him seeing the beneficial outcome it leads to loyalty. However, overusing these commands can lead to adverse outcomes and decreased loyalty. Similarly I feel this quote can apply to us as humans as well. If we set goals for ourselves and follow through on them good things happen, but if we push ourselves too much it can backfire. As George also said, "there is Time to work, time to love, Time to hurt, Time to sleep. And always, time to dream..." We must remind ourselves to always strive towards our goals, but also take the proper time to cool off when needed. Take a few minutes to rest today! And give your puppies a pat on the head from me!

Each Thursday we post a George Bird Evans quote. For the past year Ian Gray, our AmeriCorps member, has selected the quotes and posted for our enjoyment. Today is the first post by our new AmeriCorps member, Jamie Billman. Our AmeriCorps support usually come from the public history sector such as graduate students who are interested in a future in museums or park service. So my first order of business is to get them to read the writings of George Bird Evans and get an understanding of how we are working here to preserve and promote his legacy. As they read, I ask them to jot down quotes that stand out to them. Today's post I have added my photo from a Dolly Sods sunrise, one of my favorite fall locations. If you have quote to share, we would enjoy having it to share here with a photo from our archives
