Yes, having stallions living together and parenting their foals can be done.

Equine family

Dapple grey Connemara stallion Wildwych Thundersnow with his family – mare Wildwych Eve's Golden Delicious and their filly foal Wildwych Sapphira.

These horses belong to Connemara breeder Mary Prewitt, whose horses are brought up as naturally as possible. Mary's stallions live in natural groups together with their mares and foals. The stallions see the birth of their own foals and bring them up together with Mum.

Stallions being able to have any form of a social life is a rarity in the horse world – sadly very few of them have this opportunity. Of course most foals are brought up by a single parent, and weaned far too early.

Unsurprisingly Mary's foals have a reputation for having fabulous natures, they are confident and well-balanced individuals.

Huge thanks to Mary for letting me share her photo, please respect her copyright.
