🚨 FOUND DOG – PLEASE SHARE 🚨

This sweet pup, currently being called "Pitkin," was found after being struck by a car near the intersection of Pitkin Ave and Bradford St in Brooklyn. He is currently receiving care and is safe, but we are hoping to help reunite him with his family as quickly as possible.

At this time, he does not have a microchip, and we have not been able to identify an owner.

If you recognize him or have any information that may help us locate his family, please contact VERG Brooklyn immediately.

Meet Christine Galotti Noyes, LCSW, VSW, VERG Brooklyn’s Veterinary Social Worker. Christine provides compassionate support to both pet caregivers and veterinary professionals, helping navigate some of the most difficult moments in veterinary medicine, from quality-of-life discussions and grief support to compassion fatigue and pet loss.

With extensive experience in mental health and a post-master’s certificate in Veterinary Social Work from NYU, Christine is dedicated to honoring the human-animal bond and ensuring no one has to face these challenges alone.
At VERG, Veterinary Social Work Services are available at no cost to support clients through chronic illness, end-of-life decisions, euthanasia, bereavement, and more.

If the air isn't healthy for you, it's probably not healthy for your pet, either.

Poor air quality from wildfire smoke can irritate your pet's eyes and respiratory tract and may be especially dangerous for seniors, flat-faced breeds, and pets with heart or lung disease. During air quality alerts, keep outdoor time to a minimum and save the long walks for another day.

When temperatures rise, sidewalks and asphalt can become dangerously hot for your pet's paws.

If the pavement is too hot for the back of your hand for 5 seconds, it's too hot for their paws. Burns can happen quickly, even on walks that seem short or harmless.

A few ways to keep your pets safe this summer:
• Walk during the cooler hours of the morning or evening.
• Stick to grassy or shaded areas when possible.
• Bring water along to help keep them cool.
• Watch for signs of paw irritation, including limping, licking their feet, or reluctance to walk.
• Try pet friendly shoes if they will tolerate wearing them.

These two adorable cats belong to our Veterinary Social Worker, Christine Galotti Noyes. While they’re usually keeping things interesting at home, they’ve each made a trip to the ER over the years for a few unexpected adventures. Thankfully, they’re both doing great today and back to living their best nine lives. 😸

We love caring for pets of all kinds, including our own! 💚

🌍 World Zoonoses Day 🌍

Today we recognize the importance of understanding zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are infectious diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.

More than 60% of human infectious diseases have an animal origin, and about 75% can move between species. These illnesses can spread through direct contact, vectors like ticks and insects, contaminated food, or the environment itself.

As global movement, climate change, and wildlife contact increase, so does the importance of awareness, prevention, and strong veterinary and public health systems working together. The COVID-19 pandemic was a stark reminder of how closely animal and human health are connected.

Prevention starts with awareness:
✔️ Good hygiene and biosecurity practices
✔️ Safe food handling
✔️ Regular veterinary care and vaccination
✔️ Responsible interaction with animals and wildlife
