Good points!

Any advice worth taking, ESPECIALLY on hoof balance and trim quality, will not be given on line via pictures. Even if a fancy mark up App is used.

You need to see the whole picture.

You need to put your hands on that horse, watch it move, assess its environment, build a relationship with the owner and understand what they ‘want’ from the horse and are able to provide.

This job (when done properly) really isn’t as straight forward as people may think.

As an interesting example, when assessing Hoof Pastern Axis (which is just one of MANY things we assess when adjusting hoof balance) how the horse is stood will have a huge impact on what an x ray or photograph will show.

These 2 x rays below show 2 very different stories when it comes to HPA. What happened in between these X-rays…..we adjusted how he was stood!!

Attention!
I ran into something today that I think needs addressing to try prevent it from happening to anyone else. Someone canceled this morning, but they texted Grace.
Grace also has a full time job, and didn’t see the message in time to let me know, so I showed up anyways.

So, times to message Grace:
• for regular scheduling
• for policy questions
• about any appointment changes at least 2 days before the appointment

Times to message Lindsey:
• day of or day before cancellations
• hoof care questions
• anytime you’re unsure who you’re supposed to be texting.

You are 100% allowed to text me, I won’t be upset. If it’s for scheduling and you weren’t sure, I will just forward it along to Grace. 😊

Thank you all for being patient as we deal with growing pains!

PSA
With the extreme temps coming I’d like to let everyone know that some shifting of the schedule is probably going to be happening.

My hands don’t work well for hoof trimming when frozen, and they also don’t work when overly bundled to keep them warm.
Not to mention trimming in single digits or less is simply miserable.

Being in an enclosed space where the wind isn’t a factor is definitely helpful, but this space must also be dry, as well as the hooves must be dry. As soon as my gloves are wet it’s over for me in these temps.

During the extreme temps I am going to try to move things around so that I am trimming for those with barns where we can get out of the weather, and save the warmer days (20+ degrees without wind) for those that don’t have access to enclosed spaces.

Furthermore, I DO have 4wd, but it’s not foolproof. If the roads are unsafe I will absolutely be rescheduling. If you have a sketchy driveway that’s in bad shape from snow/ice I would greatly appreciate it if you’d let me know ahead of time and we can reschedule.

All I’m asking for is patience and cooperation.
Also, I hate winter 😂
Stay safe and stay warm, folks!🥶

Hey Friends!

Real person here, save the number I text from, that will be the number to reach out to for all scheduling needs. Can't wait to talk to you all

Deep central sulcus thrush.
This horse has been battling it for a year. He often was in a good bit of muck. He’s been in a cleaner environment for 6 weeks and he’s already regrown half of his frog tissue which is amazing!
If your horse is struggling with this, along with frequent balanced trims and a good diet, treatment on the owners part would include frequent cleaning out of the crack and topical treatment.
My personal favorite products for this include No Thrush hoof powder which is non caustic and helps with tissue regrowth. It packs in well and stays well, and it’s a good dry option for an issue that stems from bacteria that thrives in moisture.
Artimud is also a good option which is a clay like consistency and also stays well.
For cheaper options you can try a simple athletes foot cream as well. But you must use a hoof pick to gently clean out the crack so the medicine gets in.
If the environment is constantly wet and you have the option, bringing them into a dry space with dry shavings and letting their cleaned out feet get dry a few hours a day can make a big difference when battling thrush anywhere in the hoof.

Educational post about laminitis.

I got a massive set of bones for my birthday this year, and I’ve been slowly working through them to get everything cleaned up and organized.

I’m hoping to create more educational content with the help of these horses, there are a lot of interesting bones - and I thought maybe I’d start here:

This is a set of coffin bones (the bone inside the hoof capsule) from the same pony. Her name is Izzy.

The coffin bone on the left is from her right hind. It shows a normal coffin bone shape and healthy bone density.

The coffin bone on the right is from her left front, a foot that suffered chronically from laminitis.

You can see how extreme the bone loss is, including the loss of density in the bone that remains (Swiss cheese look)

This is an extreme example, but bone loss like this can start to occur even with low grade chronic laminitis if it’s allowed to continue on unchecked.

If your hoofcare provider is hounding you to get your horse off grass - this is why they get so upset when you don’t do it.

If your horse gets “footy” in the spring and you put metal shoes on to “fix” it, you could be masking inflammation from laminitis.

Once that bone is gone, it’s gone.

With laminitis, prevention is key! Diet, exercise, frequent and balanced trimming - and don’t ignore the subtle signs!
