Then you’ll want to remember the 3-3-3 Rule, a simple but powerful guideline that helps you understand what your new furry friend might go through as they adjust to their new life.

3 Days – Your pet is likely feeling overwhelmed and unsure. They may hide, sleep a lot, or avoid interaction. This is their decompression time. Be gentle and patient.

3 Weeks – They start to feel more at ease, learn your routine, and show more of their personality. They may test boundaries - this is totally normal!

3 Months – Real trust and bonding begin. By now, they feel like part of the family. You’ll see their true personality and form a deep connection.

The 3-3-3 rule is important because it reminds us that adoption is a journey, not a one-day event. Many shelter pets need time to heal, learn to trust, and settle in.

So if you’re adopting - give it time, give it love, and give them a chance.
You might be saving their life, but they’ll change yours too.
