Why it’s SO important to have a predictable routine when passing dogs/pray animals, regardless of whether you “think” they won’t react.

POV: the fake helper dog you use for reactivity training has seen some things…terrible things…

I always find it interesting when clients get to me after trying multiple trainers. Naturally, I want to know what worked and didn’t work, what spoke to them and what they felt they couldn’t execute. It usually turns out that those trainers weren’t exactly all wrong or all right, but rather, they took an overly simplistic approach. That is to say, some of the methods used may have worked in conjunction with others, but almost never totally on their own. In fairness, they may have run out of time before a better approach or combination of approaches were uncovered.

When I hear trainers brag on social media that they have “fixed” a dog that had worked with other trainers (I guess who “failed” the dogs and the owners in some way), it gives me pause. Because the truth of the matter is, my job becomes 10x easier when someone else has worked out, through a process of elimination, what I should or shouldn’t incorporate into a training plan. They have saved me time and effort and I am able to move more quickly toward a solution. It has nothing to do with how talented I am, or that I somehow possess a secret method that others don’t. I’m just a good listener who uses the information well.

If we are not careful, the answers may elude us entirely. In the quest for recognition and validation, it is often the dog and the owner who will suffer the most.
