It happens every year - the doubt starts to creep in. It’s when the summer is almost over and the school year is about to start. Social media shows me all the fun trips everyone is going on and I start to feel like I’m missing out.

Wildlife rehabbers generally dont have time to go on trips and take off during spring and summer as that’s “baby season” and it’s when we are needed most. There aren’t enough of us and people become desperate trying to find help for wildlife they have found that are in need.

Yesterday we were a bit short staffed and I worked from 7 am - 12 am. I spent some time alone with my thoughts and, at one point, started feeling sorry for myself.

I sat out by Nibi’s enclosure and she came out. We sat by the water while I scratched her back - she loves it when I get spots she can’t reach. I remembered when she was just a baby - found orphaned and helpless on the side of the road.

When I went to walk inside, I passed Daphne, who was busy incubating eggs she is very proud of. She gave me a “warning” quack. I respectfully stayed away. I too am proud of her, but I keep my pride for her at a distance, for her comfort. Should she need me - I’m never too far away.

I stayed up late giving life saving medications to a young hawk whose blood won’t clot and I made a sick weasel comfortable while it looks its final breaths.

It’s not a typical Saturday night for most people. I get it.

But you know what? When all is said and done - I love it. It’s not normal. I get it. But it’s magical. A trip to the Bahamas is incredible, but it can’t match the feeling of purpose. I’ll go on those trips someday - likely in the winter, when I am not needed as much.

But for now, I am content being exactly where I am supposed to be doing exactly what I was meant to do. All you other rehabbers and life savers out there - I see you and I appreciate your sacrifices. You make the world a better place and I am grateful for you.

Meet Hondo. He’s blind. He’s lumpy. He’s got one eye that points to heaven and one that quit the job entirely. His tail? It wags like it’s trying to send a Morse code SOS. Honestly, we’re not sure what kind of dog he is - possibly a cross between a piglet, a loaf of bread, and your uncle's old recliner.

But listen. Hondo is PURE LOVE in a slightly crumpled wrapper. He navigates life by smell, snuggles like it’s his full-time job, and snorts like a tiny pig when he’s excited (which is often).

He may not win Best in Show, but he will win your weird little heart. But in all seriousness, Hondo is the PERFECT boy. He loves kids, other dogs, and is potty and crate trained. He’s a diamond in the “ruff”, and ready to change your life.
