💕 It’s easy to think that giving our dogs love is enough.
And don’t get me wrong, love matters. A lot.

👩‍⚕️ But over the years, both as a veterinarian and as a dog mom, I’ve learned that being loved isn’t the same as being fulfilled.

Dogs need connection, but they also need opportunities to move their bodies, engage their minds, solve problems, explore their world, and do the things that make them light up.

For Finn, that might be a run, a swim, or simply being by my side. For Journey, it’s often an adventure, a challenge, or a chance to put her nose and brain to work.

The activities themselves aren’t the point.
The point is that fulfillment looks different for every dog.

When we learn what brings our dogs joy and intentionally make space for those things, we help them do more than just live long lives. We help them live full ones and keep them from expressing themselves in other, more destructive or questionable ways. 😬

What’s one activity that instantly lights up your dog’s face?

Running has become so much more than exercise for me.
It’s my social network, my mental outlet, and with two sporting dogs, a physical outlet for them too.

💕 Some of my strongest friendships have been built one mile at a time. There’s something special about the conversations shared before sunrise, moving through quiet streets while the rest of the world is still asleep. We’ve celebrated milestones, worked through challenges, solved problems, and shared countless laughs somewhere between the warm-up and the cool-down.

🌎 Running has also allowed me to experience places in a way I never would have otherwise. Whether traveling for a race or simply lacing up in a new city, there’s no better way to explore than on foot. You notice things you’d never see from a car, and every route tells its own story.

🔐 And then there are Finn and Journey. Running gives them the physical outlet they need, but for me it’s also some of our best bonding time. We’ve explored countless miles together, and when I’m heading out alone before sunrise, they’re my most trusted running partners and my security detail. The miles are always better with them by my side.

I didn’t start running long distances until veterinary school, and I’m so glad I took that first step. The miles have given me far more than fitness. They’ve brought friendships, adventures, confidence, perspective, and some of my favorite memories.

☕️ Running fills my cup in so many ways, and today I’m grateful for every mile behind me and every one still ahead.

Happy Global Running Day! 🏃‍♀️🐾

🐍 Journey would like everyone to know she successfully located, retrieved, and proudly presented today’s “afternoon snack.”

I would like everyone to know that was absolutely not on the meal plan.

👩‍⚕️ I would like everyone to know that was absolutely not on the meal plan!

🧠 One of the coolest things about living with dogs is watching instincts that were carefully selected over thousands of years show up in everyday life. For Journey, finding critters, tracking scents, and carrying around her “prize” isn’t bad behavior, it’s her brain doing exactly what it was designed to do.

That’s why fulfillment is about more than exercise. Dogs need opportunities to sniff, search, explore, and engage with the world around them. The goal isn’t to eliminate instincts—it’s to give them safe outlets for them.

Thankfully, the snake and Journey both walked away unharmed. Though Journey is still convinced she deserved recognition for a successful hunt. 🐾

👇 What’s the weirdest “treasure” your dog has proudly brought you? Mine apparently thinks reptiles count as gifts now. 🐍🐾
