It never ceases to amaze me! 💩

As the oxygen-loving microorganisms break down the organic material, turning it into fuel for cellular processes, they create heat.
At the ideal temperature range of between 130 and 160 degrees, w**d seeds and undersirable pathogens are killed off, and eventually we get beautifully fertile (clean!) soil which keeps our pastures happily producing forage. Carefully balanced moisture and oxygen levels keep this baby cookin’ even through an arctic freeze.

Occasionally, while hanging out with the herd, one of them might start licking my hand. This unsolicited behavior (not prompted by feeding a treat or some flavor residue left on my hand) can go on for 10 minutes or more. They get a dreamy look in their eye and seem very happy to be engaging with me in this way.
Scientists aren’t clear on what stimulates the behavior, but it appears to be a bonding activity, similar to mutual grooming (although I am not really offering anything in return other than presence - and hand of course).
What do you think?

KSF is SO grateful for YOU - participants, volunteers and supporters and wishes you a beautiful Thanksgiving Day!

Did you know that the intentional act of giving thanks releases feel-good neurochemicals like oxytocin, dopamine and serotonin, not unlike the effect of spending time with people you care about? Done regularly, you can literally rewire your brain.

We hope today that you will revel in your blessings and especially those of relationship (like KO and Dakota do daily 💕)!

The challenges facing American Service Women & Men are many. Their time serving our country may have left wounds - visible and invisible, and the shift back to civilian life is rarely easy.

To the Veterans that have come to KSF,
you have left an indelible mark on our hearts. It has been such an honor to serve and get to know you. Whatever inspired you to work to protect America and her people, thank you. And whatever brought you to KSF, we are so glad you are part of our community!

It has been an honor to serve our protectors of American liberty.

Having a person yawn repeatedly in my presence might lead me to suspect my own inadequacies as an interesting companion, yet when Sansa does it as she hangs out with me, I can’t help but feel that my presence was satisfactory. What an amazing, sweet feeling.
Maybe I should reconsider my perception of people yawning with me.

Cody-Cub could eat no fat,
And Arch could eat no lean.
But betwixt the two of them,
They licked the platter clean.

Every. Single. Morning .
So cute 🐕 🐴😃

I found this fascinating!

One of our Board members, Andre Costa CharacterCounseling, is not only a gifted therapist, but also a very accomplished trumpet player. After working on curriculum one day last June, we went out to see how the herd might respond to the sound. Holly and Sansa, who had been way over by the Riverview pasture “free ranging” came cantering over (I wish I had started filming earlier to capture the full extent of their enthusiasm).
This wasn’t the first time we’ve explored music with the herd, but the bright brass sound was met a little differently from the guitar, violin and flute. Research has shown an increase in Serotonin levels and decreases in salivary cortisol in horses listening to country and classical (indicating a calming effect), while jazz and rock can be activating. Not surprising really, but very cool to see played out in front of us.

The moonlight on last night’s late check/feeding was absolutely magical. The still beauty, especially after such a chaotically windy day, captivated me.

(And I am astonished at how well these iPhones can capture this! There was no manmade light here, yet everything is clear as day!)
