HIP has no overhead, as we are all volunteers and work out of the Bossier City shelter & our homes. All
advertising is also paid for by our volunteers, to ensure donations continue to go to the animals. We assist with adoptions at the shelter and off-site locations, such as PetSmart. Through these methods and with community help, we work closely with the BCAS staff and our rescue and transport partners to save all adoptable animals that enter the BCAS system, whether in the shelter or housed by fosters. We also conduct a low-cost Rabies Clinic bi-annually for the community and have participated in providing shelter and care for animals evacuated during hurricanes beginning with Katrina in 2005.

โ Why do we think Trap/Neuter/Vaccinate/Return (TNVR) is necessary?
๐ IT STOPS THE SUFFERING.
Without TNVR, community cats face illness, injury, starvation, and overpopulation. TNVR ensures theyโre healthy, vaccinated, and living safer livesโwithout adding to the cat population.
๐ It works. TNVR stabilizes colonies, reduces nuisance behaviors, and improves the lives of both cats and the community.
Payton, with BCAC, took Bandit home to foster during the cold snap. She reports โBandit doesnโt mind the kitties, gets along with her dogs, loves food and is a cuddle bugโ. Bandit is still available for adoption!!! She is an older dog and who doesnโt have love for an older dog?

Please make sure your pets have adequate shelter in preparation of a drastic drop in temps.
Contact Hand in Paw or your veterinarian if you have questions about adequate shelter. Remember, shelters should use straw (not hay or blankets) for proper insulation and protection from freezing moisture.
A 50 DEGREE TEMPERATURE DROP!! We go from 82 Saturday afternoon to 33 by Monday morning in Shreveport! This cold front means business!

November is "Adopt a Senior Pet Month!" Meet Mac, our resident senior kitty. This distinguished gentleman is looking for a loving lap to call his own. Mac is reportedly front declawed, so he should be indoor only. You can apply to adopt Mac vis his Petfinder link (QR code) or by visiting him at Bossier City Animal Control.
Mac is available for foster, adoption, rescue. You can financially sponsor him via Petfinder or by making a donation directly to Hand in Paw.

Please remember this for your ferals. It is really important. Not sure we agree with the chopped straw though.

Send a message to Hand In Paw - Friends of Bossier City Animal Control:
In 2006, Steve and Phyllis Whatley recognized the needs of the homeless animals of Bossier Parish. They had been volunteers at Bossier City Animal Control for a few years and saw how the small shelter struggled to meet the needs of the animals received. This was their impetus in founding our organization, Bossier City Animal Control Volunteers โ Hand in Paw. They created this nonprofit 501 (c) (3) to provide vet care for shelter animals. It is important to note that our legal name is: Hand In Paw-Friends of Bossier City Animal Control; all IRS, legal receipts, and anything else of a legal nature will have this name. Hand in Paw (HIP) has shifted its mission as necessary in the ever-changing world of animal rescue. However, one thing has been a constant, and that is providing vetting for animals in need. We have been very fortunate in our ability to work with local vets to provide emergency as well as routine care for animals. As funds allow, HIP has also helped pet owners with emergency vet needs on a case by case basis.
Besides vetting of shelter animals, HIP is dedicated to promoting spay and neuter policies. We donate to Bossier Cityโs spay/neuter fund, helping to spay shelter animals or provide the vouchers to adopters. We also pay for local vets to spay and neuter animals. We recently have coordinated some efforts in the Trap Neuter Release (TNR); this has resulted in training volunteers to be more knowledgeable in helping the public humanely trap animals lowering the number of unwanted feral and stray animals on the streets.
Another constant in our 12 years of existence has been the manning of the Saturday adoptions, at BCAC and PetSmart, as well as other offsite events. We host fundraisers at different local restaurants, participate in the Barkus and Meoux parade, Margaritaville pet events, as well as other venues. These volunteer events are responsible for the adoption of thousands of animals each year.
Twice a year we host a low cost rabies clinic with the help of Dr. Gia Morgan and Dr. Susan Bradley. These events vaccinate approximately 800 animals each year. This service helps owners to follow Louisiana laws and promotes the health of animals that might not receive this important vaccine otherwise.
HIP is a big promoter of fostering to save shelter animals. This helps with overcrowding in our small shelter. We currently have a wonderful group of cat fosters and are branching out into dog fostering. We believe that fostering is of great benefit to our shelter animals. Cats and dogs behave differently in the shelter environment than they do in a home environment. Fostering provides crucial information to help shelter staff and volunteers answer questions potential adopters have. We look forward to continuing to grow our foster community.
We are excited to begin growing our involvement in the rescue and transportation mission at BCAC. We are working on building a fleet of transporters and reputable rescues to save even more of our animals. Along with this we are working on creating another sanctuary for cats.
This page is dedicated to networking the animals. We post pictures of the available cats and dogs. HIP will also post photos of missing pets, important animal information and sometimes just fun animal loving things. This page has several admins and we strive to answer any and all questions about the animals or policies.
The only way our group can provide these services is through donations from the public. There are several ways to donate to us. You can always bring a donation to the shelter at 3217 Old Shed Rd, Bossier City, La 71111. We also have an Amazon wish list. If you want to donate directly to the vet, we generally use Viking Drive Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Thomas. These donations can be called into (318) 747-9150. We do use other vets and we will post information on the page if there is another vet that you can call donations to. Some things we always need, besides money, is dry cat food (our cats like the non-colorful formulas), wet cat food, dry and wet kitten food, clay litter, blankets, toys, ringworm treatments, flea treatments, dry and wet dog & puppy food, kitten and puppy formula, just to name a few items.
