TNR SWVA

TNR SWVA We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for community cats in Southwest Virginia. Need assistance? We'll be in touch!

Please visit our website and submit an Assistance Request Form. Our mission is to advocate and participate in trap, neuter & return for community cats; to help and provide outreach to members of the community to humanely control cat overpopulation; to create a gateway for the public through communication and exemplification to gain support of TNR; & to serve as a resource for guidance, health and

welfare of community cats so that we are decreasing the amount of suffering, shelter intakes and unnecessary euthanasias, all while keeping the most important aspect in mind, to improve and save the lives of community cats.

We are excited to announce our partnership with Yummypets & the chance to win 330 pounds of FREE KIBBLE for Southwest Virginia's community cats! All we need from YOU is a click a day & shares, shares, SHARES! It's free, it's easy, and it saves lives. 🐈

While our organization focuses on Trap-Neuter-Return, our mission doesn't end there. We also support local colony caretakers who feed and care for our community cats. Many are on fixed incomes and still show up daily to make sure no one goes hungry. 🫶🏻

Help us help them. A click a day can go a LONG way! 🗓

Many companies support the charitable activities of their employees by generously matching their gifts of time & money. Matching gifts are initiated by filling out a simple form provided by your employer, often found online. If you have questions about your employer’s matching gift policy, please check with your human resources, community relations or charitable giving department for more information. Matching gifts are a great way to double your lifesaving support! 🐈

is a day that we encourage ALL cat lovers to show your love and commitment to your kitty by making sure he/she has proper veterinary care. This important day points out a statistic that’s sad, but true: 83% of cats are taken to the vet in the first year of ownership, but over half of them never return! Cats may outnumber dogs in family homes, but the number of cat vet visits is lagging.

Another day of our favorite part of TNR: Release!

This family and neighbors care a lot about their community kitties and wanted to do what’s best for the kitties by helping them with spay & neuter.

They are released back safely to their natural environment with their people who love them. This is what we hope for with all of the community kitties.

Did you know that black animals are usually the last to be adopted and first to be euthanized? This phenomenon is called Black Dog and Cat Syndrome.

🖤 Black dogs and cats wait four times longer to get adopted from shelters and rescues as their lighter coated and more colorful counterparts.

🖤 Black animals may be more difficult to photograph, making their listings less attractive to the public eye.

🖤 Another barrier against adopting black animals includes superstition. Some believe that black cats symbolize bad luck and often associate them with witchcraft or evil.

Today, we celebrate these sleek, elegant beasts for the beautiful, special creatures that they are. Join us - show us your mini black panthers in the comments! 👇

Shelters across the nation are in a crisis due to the number of unwanted animals. Healthy animals are being euthanized daily to make room for more.

We can ALL do our part by spaying and neutering our pets and any strays that we encounter.

If you are in Southwest Virginia and need assistance with spaying and neutering stray/feral community cats in your neighborhood, please visit our website to learn more about our TNR program and fill out an assistance request form. Together, we can make a difference! 🐈

“Community cat” is a term used to describe a cat who is unowned and lives outdoors. Both feral and stray cats are considered community cats. Community cats have a wide range of behaviors and degrees of socialization.

🐈A stray cat is one who has lived indoors and was socialized to people at some point. Perhaps she left or lost her home; or maybe she was abandoned and no longer has regular human contact. Over time, a friendly stray cat can become feral if she spends too much time without positive interaction with humans. Under the right circumstances, a stray cat can also become an indoor pet once again. Strays that are reintroduced to an indoor home after living outdoors often require a period of time to reacclimate.

🐈A feral cat is an unsocialized outdoor cat who has little to no physical contact with humans, or the contact that they've had was not always positive. Most feral cats are unlikely to ever become a lap cat or enjoy living indoors, but kittens born to feral cats can often be socialized if started at an early age and adopted into indoor homes.

By understanding the many degrees of socialization that cats an exhibit, you can better help and protect them. To learn more please check out this informational link provided by Alley Cat Allies: https://www.alleycat.org/resources/cat-socialization-continuum-guide/.
