Marable Farms Draft Refuge: Part of the Peace For All Animals Community Drafts are often used and abused by certain groups until they are no longer seen as valuable or useful.

Our sanctuary was created after rescuing our sweet Moose from a local kill pen, where we realized there was a need to help save these gentle giants from slaughter. When they can no longer pull carriages or farm equipment, they are discarded at kill pens, where they eventually ship to slaughter and become part of the meat trade. Even with his arthritic knees and battered body, Moose has proven to b

e the best therapy for our family, and it is our belief that by providing more horses with sanctuary, they will be able to spread messages of love and peace to a larger population.

This boy right here may have been intended to help S, but he has probably helped me the most. About 6 weeks ago I went to put his halter on from the wrong angle. Moose is very head shy as a result of what we assume were past abuses; he requires his halter to be put on while facing him head-on. Not from the side as is more traditional. I know this and I usually listen to his wishes. Anyway, he whipped his massive-but-oh-so-cute head around, which collided with my head. I immediately saw “stars” and thought I was going to vomit. I knew I had a concussion. I stumbled out to the pasture and laid down; I couldn’t make it to the house so I went as far as I could. I swear Moose knew something was wrong because he immediately walked up to me, sniffed, and then just stood above me blocking the hot sun and keeping watch for predators. He only left his post when I was finally able to stand. He didn’t mean to hurt me; I ignored his needs and he was scared so he reacted instinctively. Absolutely my mistake and one I will not make again. I am thankful Moose took care of me like I was a member of his herd. I could not love him any more than I do. He is perfection.

Please send all the love to sweet Fiona. She will be laid to rest on Friday. We wish we could have given the gentlest of giants more than 2 years of love and rest, but her 30+ year-old body is tired and she’s telling us she’s ready. And even though we will never be “ready”, we will listen to her. We will try not to focus on the “what if’s” (what if we had been able to rescue her sooner; what if she had never been forced to overwork; what if we try to get her through one more summer; what if we try xyz…), and will just give her all the love we possibly can over the next 48 hours. Thank you to all of you-from those who helped bail her and then got her to us, as well as to those who have loved her from afar. We appreciate any and all good vibes you can send her/our way.

The sweetest boy in all the world decided to lay upside down in the back pasture (it slopes downhill), and got himself stuck. Between all the mud we currently have and being a giant with bad knees, we had our work cut out for us, but we were able to get him back up!! Moosie Moose was thankful for the help and immediately devoured a double serving of grain and a bale of hay. He only took a decade off our lives 😭. He may be muddy but he sure is cute 🤎.

Clearly, Fiona adjusted quite well to the new hay feeder.

We finally found a Moose-sized coat!! It’s a 90” and he could probably take a 92”-94” but it was brand new and super cheap on Marketplace so we grabbed it. And now Moosie Moose is handsome *and* warm!!
Everyone is blanketed and ready for the 20 degree nights 🤎❤️💗.

We just built Fiona a slow(ish) hay feeder!! She is a little leery of it (it smells like fence because it’s made of old boards) but the other 2 highly approve, and will help make sweet Fi more comfortable with this scary change.
