It’s Feature Friday, but today we’re trading in pine thickets for mountain trails.
We’re up in the Blue Ridge Mountains on a bit of a family vacation—but as usual, the dogs are along for the ride.
Being in bear country gives Cora and Harley a chance to take in new terrain, fresh wildlife scent, and strange sounds—and I treat that exposure as valuable as any scent drill.
Not every lesson comes from a blood trail. Sometimes it’s just about soaking in the environment, building confidence, and learning how to process the unknown.
We’ll be back soon, but for now, we’re enjoying some cool air and getting the dogs a few miles of experience that you just can’t recreate at home.

Let’s talk scent.
A wounded deer doesn’t just leave blood—it leaves a trail of complex scent signals that trained dogs are built to follow.

One of the main sources is the interdigital gland, located between the hooves. As a deer walks or runs—especially under stress—it deposits a unique scent, almost like a fingerprint (Müller-Schwarze, 1971).

On top of that, the tarsal glands, urine, and even stress-related hormones (like adrenaline) contribute to the scent trail. These change chemically after the shot, and experienced tracking dogs can detect that shift (Kreeger & Arnemo, 2012).

The important part?
Just because the blood stops doesn’t mean the trail ends.

Dogs don’t rely solely on blood. They follow the full scent picture, especially when trained to detect individual deer scent rather than just visible sign (Jezierski & Ensminger, 2016).
Whether you’re thinking of training your own dog or calling a tracker this fall, understanding scent is key to ethical recovery.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy 4th of July from all of us at Slade’s Whitetail Recovery.
Grateful for the freedom we enjoy, the land we hunt, and the people (and dogs) we get to share it with.
Hope your day is filled with family, good food, and maybe a little scouting for the season ahead.
🇺🇸 Stay safe, and give your dogs a little extra love today—fireworks aren’t their favorite kind of thunder.

Tip Tuesday:

You ever get that gut-sinking feeling right after the shot—when you’re just not sure?
Maybe the hit looked back, maybe the blood trail dries up quicker than it should, or maybe you just can’t shake the feeling that something’s off.
That’s the moment to slow down—not charge ahead.
Back out, mark your last blood, and call a tracker before that sick feeling turns into a lost deer.
I’ve seen dogs recover deer hours—or even days—after the shot. But the earlier we get called in, the better the odds.
Whether it’s a big buck or meat for the freezer, that track deserves every effort.

Just posted a new video of Cora working a test track under some challenging conditions.
Hot evening, no real wind, and terrain that pulled scent away from the line—this one pushed her to work ground scent without much help from the wind.
She tracked about 140 yards in under 6 minutes, off-lead and steady the whole way. At just 5 months old, I’m proud of how she handled it.

This isn’t just brush—it’s a classroom.
Cora and I worked through about 800 yards of thick, briar-infested terrain today—not to follow scent, but to build confidence and trust in tough conditions.
There was no drag laid on this run. The goal was simple: expose her to the kind of terrain we’re likely to see during real-world tracks and let me get a feel for her limits, mindset, and how she handles moving through it all.
Middle Georgia brush doesn’t cut anyone any slack—if your dog hasn’t seen it before, the first time on a track isn’t when you want them to figure it out.
These training days might not be flashy, but they’re some of the most important.

We’ve got some new gear coming soon—and I’m pretty excited about it.

Our first run of shirts will feature this custom artwork of Cora doing what she does best. It’s a design that means a lot to me, and I think it’ll resonate with folks who live the same lifestyle.

We’re also putting together a set of hats with a cleaner look—just the Slade’s Whitetail Recovery name up front. Simple, sharp, and made to wear every day.

I’ll share more details soon once we get them in hand, but if you're interested in grabbing one when they drop, let me know in the comments or drop a 👍.
