Why the fuss about fireworks? While they may be fun for the humans, most dogs react fearfully to their loud, unpredictable sounds and bright flashes, which can trigger their natural "fight-or-flight" response. This fear is intensified by the sudden and unexpected nature of fireworks, as well as the lack of a clear explanation for their dog.

Let's make this July 4th be all about the shelter pets!

It is officially Summer! We are all starting to feel the heat in Palm Beach County! ☀️🔥🌡

PBCACC wants you to be aware of the warning signs of heat stress in pets! Knowing these signs can help protect your pet from a dangerous situation.

We recommend only walking dogs in the early morning or late evening during summer. Early morning and late evening are typically cooler, which will help keep the risk of heat stress low. You can use short potty breaks during the day as needed. 🌡🔥☀️

Leptospirosis has been reported in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties in 2025!

Have you every heard of Leptospirosis?

Lets take a moment and review some of the concerning highlights.

1. Lepto is a bacterial infection.
2. Lepto bacteria is found in soil and standing water and comes from the urine of wild animals like raccoons and rats.
3. Lepto can easily infect dogs. It is less common in cats.
4. Lepto is zoonotic, which means it can infect people too!
5. It causes kidney and liver failure.
6. Symptoms of lepto include: fever, shivering, muscle tenderness, reluctance to move, increased thirst, changes in the frequency or amount of urination, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes), or painful inflammation within the eyes.
7. Leptospirosis is generally treated with antibiotics and supportive care. When treated early and aggressively, the chances for recovery are good but there is still a risk of permanent residual kidney or liver damage.
8. Currently available vaccines effectively prevent leptospirosis and protect dogs for at least 12 months. Annual vaccination is recommended for at-risk dogs.

If you wish to get your dog vaccinated for lepto, your dog will need a series of two injections 2-4 weeks apart. After that, annual boosters are effective.

Call Harmony Vet Care 813-871-0850 if you wish to discuss your dog's risk, or schedule an appointment for a lepto vaccine. Lepto vaccines at Harmony Vet Care are $20 each. If your dog has an annual exam on file within the last 12 months, there is no exam fee!

✨Did you know that if you have a pacemaker, you can include it in your Will to be donated to a dog in need after you pass away?
Although pacemakers cannot be used for another human, they can help dogs with heart problems and potentially save their lives. You can arrange for the pacemaker to be sent to a vet of your choice.
Many pacemakers are simply thrown away, and dogs may die because people do not know about this option.
Donating the pacemaker can even save the dog's owner the cost of a new one, which can sometimes make a crucial difference in affording life-saving treatment.
Credit goes to the respective owner ~

Very helpful! Also why I usually "ignore" a pet initially when I enter a home. I like to take a history while I let the pet warm up to my presence in an I threatening manner.

Important reminder as we enter the holiday season and the homes of our friends, families, and animal companions 🐶🎄
