Second chances come in many forms.

For Kenny, that second chance came through our Ironwood Dog Foster Program, where incarcerated caretakers David and Daniels are helping him build confidence, practice good manners, and prepare for life in a forever home.

This partnership with Ironwood State Prison provides shelter dogs with daily structure and companionship while creating much-needed space in our overcrowded kennels. Dogs in the program work on leash walking, crate sleeping, and basic manners, helping them become more adoptable.

Kenny joined the program in April and has been thriving. Now, he's ready for the next step: finding a family of his own.

Watch David and Daniels share what Kenny has meant to them and learn more about the impact of this unique program.

Kenny is one of more than 40 available dogs available for adoption through the program. Adoption fees are waived and include spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip and an engraved name tag.

Visit rcdas.org/ironwood to learn more about the program and how to adopt Kenny, who is ready to go home with you today.

If you would like to support the dogs and caretakers in the program, you can donate items from their Amazon Wish List! Items will be sent directly to Ironwood State Prison. This list is managed by the Ironwood staff and changes based on their needs.

Back in February, Nellie was brought to our shelter after a community member witnessed her being hit by a car. She arrived with multiple fractures, including injuries to her left tibia and femur.

Our veterinary care team spent weeks helping Nellie heal, recover, and regain her strength. Then, her story took an incredible turn.

Thanks to our partnership with Wings of Rescue, Nellie boarded a flight to Maryland on April 2 for a new opportunity. Soon after arriving, she found her family.

Her adopter, Molly, recently shared this update with us:
“She is doing so well. She's gained weight, got a haircut and is running around our yard living her best life. We love her so much and just wanted to share her happy ending thanks to you all.”

Stories like Nellie’s are why this work matters. From emergency medical care to transport partnerships and adoption, every step helps give pets a second chance.

We still have many dogs waiting for their happy ending. Visit rcdas.org to learn how you can adopt, foster, or support pets in our care.

Introducing 'Project Get Out'

In partnership with Jason Heigl Foundation and Two Pups Wellness Fund, we are launching a new program designed to help dedicated rescue partners save more lives. Project Get Out is simple: transfer a dog that’s been in RCDAS care for more than 21 days and receive $500.

The first dog to be rescued from the program is one-year-old Buckaroo, who was at the Western Riverside Animal Shelter for 34 days. The Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center is now helping the playful Doberman Pinscher find a home!

“We understand the huge effort that goes into rescuing a single dog from a shelter, and we are eager to support rescues who step up to save a life through Project Get Out,” said Nancy Heigl from the Jason Heigl Foundation.

Due to the generosity of the Jason Heigl Foundation, RCDAS is launching the first iteration of Project Get Out and will need ongoing fundraising to cover future costs. The public can support this effort by donating directly to Two Pups Wellness Fund, where donations will go directly to saving RivCo dogs: www.twopups.org/donate/

“Two Pups Wellness Fund is excited to partner with Riverside County and the Jason Heigl Foundation to expand our already successful Arizona-based program,” said Two Pups Wellness Fund Executive Director Bip Haley. “By working together, we can save even more lives in Riverside County.”

This initiative is part of several new programs implemented by RCDAS as part of the RivCo Rise commitment to help more pets leave the shelter system and improve the live release rate for dogs and cats. The first phase of Project Get Out will be available to rescues by invite-only. Interested rescue organizations can send an email to [email protected] to learn more about the program.

On Tuesday, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors directed County Counsel, in coordination with the Department of Animal Services and Code Enforcement, to initiate litigation seeking compliance of County regulations and ordinances against the duck sanctuary operator, and the owner of the property located in Anza. This action is the result of an on-going animal welfare investigation that started in 2022, and has been monitored across four different properties since then. The Department of Animal Services and Code Enforcement responded to complaints and followed administrative enforcement procedures, which have now escalated into civil litigation.

"Our priority is putting animals in homes that ensure their safety and humane treatment," stated Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “We as a Board realized that we must take action to hold this individual and future offenders accountable.”

This unprecedented operation revealed a need for updates to our adoption policy that now includes an adoption agreement for animals other than dogs and cats. When an animal leaves our shelters, there is an expressed and inherent understanding that they are meant to be treated as companion animals, which is now reflected in our adoption agreement. We are committed to helping the animals in our care and this experience has shown us how we can do better. Our priority for this case going forward is to work with rescue organizations and community members to find solutions where the animals that can be saved are saved. This remains an active animal welfare investigation and more details will be shared when available.

“Rescues are grateful to be partnering with Riverside County Animal Services to help ensure that each of these birds receives care from a trusted avian veterinarian and has the opportunity to find a safe, loving pet-only home. We are also deeply grateful to the Board of Supervisors for listening to our concerns, hearing our voices, and taking action to help protect these animals from the horrendous conditions they have been living in.” - Darcy Smith, co- founder Funky Chicken Rescue & Ashli Shore, co-founder The Shore Sanctuary

Behind the walls of Ironwood State Prison, something remarkable is unfolding. RivCo shelter dogs are learning patience, trust and new manners thanks to their foster caretakers helping prepare them for adoption.

Recently, our team visited Ironwood to check in on our Ironwood Dog Foster Program and deliver much-needed supplies, many made possible by a generous donation from Supervisor Karen Spiegel. We also welcomed 17 new dogs into the program, each one starting a fresh chapter with dedicated foster caretakers by their side.

More than 40 dogs from the program are ready for adoption right now at no cost to you. All adoption fees are waived and include spay or neuter, vaccines and microchip. Every dog who finds a home opens the door for another to begin their journey.

21 dogs took a lifesaving Wings of Rescue flight yesterday to begin their next chapter with Seattle Humane. 🐾✈️

These transports help connect shelter pets with communities ready to adopt while creating much-needed space in our shelters for animals still waiting for their chance.

Every adoption, foster application, donation, and share helps make moments like this possible. Because of your support, more pets are getting the opportunity to find loving homes.

Thank you to our partners at Seattle Humane and Wings of Rescue for helping RivCo pets reach brighter futures. ❤️

Rescued Cabazon Dogs Available for Adoption

On Tuesday, May 12th, over 80 dogs from a recent rescue operation will be available for adoption at our Blythe Animal Shelter starting at 10 a.m. The dogs were removed from a property in Cabazon following an investigation by our Animal Control Officers. The dogs were kept in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, prompting the seizure. All of the dogs removed from the property were evaluated by a veterinary team and completed a mandatory hold at the shelter. They range in size, breed and age, and many show signs of high sociability. While these dogs came from a harsh environment, they are deserving of a place to call home, and they are waiting eagerly with wagging tails and hopeful eyes.

Now is the time to take action for RivCo pets.

Our department is at 247% over capacity for dogs, and we do not have the kennel space to move them into our other shelter locations. Even if you can't adopt one of these dogs from Blythe, you can help by adopting or fostering any dog from any RivCo shelter location. All adoption fees are waived and include spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a microchip and an engraved ID tag.
