I’ve decided to start a little series where I share some info and tips equine related!
I think everyone can learn something new!
With the temps dropping and winter coming full force, this weeks topic is about…HAY!
🌾benefits of hay:
•provides horses with essential fiber
•crucial for their digestive health,
•prevents colic and ulcers
(Signs of ulcers: mare-ish, cinchy, grouchy attitude etc)
•Did you know the main cause of ulcers is lack of hay? Many show horses, and performance horses are tossed a flake or two,1-2x a day and are expected to feel good and perform on that diet. What?!!! While they may look “good” on this diet with all the muscle and all of the grain they get poured on the inside they’re uncomfortable with ulcers. Horses are GRAZING animals, designed to have hay in front of them 25/8, anymore than 3 hours without hay your risk of ulcers and colic go 🆙
The chewing action helps with saliva production, neutralizing stomach acids. (And boredom!)
Hay also helps keep your horse warm and toasty in the cold months!!! ❄️
Horses burn calories keeping themselves warm…guess what gives them calories…HAY!
Different types of hay offer different nutritional values; for example, alfalfa is higher in protein and calcium. while grass hays are lower in these nutrients but high in fiber.
CHOOSE GOOD HAY 🏆moldy or dusty hay can cause respiratory problems.
Ways to provide more hay:
•Hay nets
•Hay feeders
•Round bales
•or just loose leaf!
(Horses eating off the ground actually is very good for their top line health! A lowered more natural grazing headset > high tied up hay nets)
Choosing the right type and quality ensures your horse gets the needed nutrients for their needs, whether they're a performance horse, a lesson horse, or just enjoying pasture life!
If you take anything from this post…give your horses more hay, and then a few more flakes 🫶🏼
