I started a c**t for some people when I was a kid that was pretty sensitive. I’d crawl on him and all he wanted to do was gain speed. I’d pull him to a stop and as soon as I pitched him the reins, he’d take off again. I complained to my grandpa and told him this horse was just high strung.

He had me strip my saddle off and turn him out in the pens. As soon as I was removed from the situation, he walked over to the corner and stood with his head down. Grandpa said, “is he high strung or are you causing an issue you didn’t even recognize?”

I try to keep this scenario in the front of my mind. There is no denying that some horses are way more trainable than others. However, to blame the reaction to pressure solely on the horse is ignorant.

He urged me to be creative and to pay attention to the things I was doing that I didn’t realize I was doing.

The toughest horses have the most to teach. It isn’t always about what we can teach a horse. Sometimes it’s about what they taught us.
