IT'S GETTING HOT OUT HERE!!!!!!!!

Which thankfully, means summer is right around the corner, and, with summer, comes hotter temperatures, both outside AND inside.... your vehicle!!!!

It is NEVER safe to leave a pet unattended in a car, regardless of the outside temperature or whether the windows are cracked open. Cars can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures, even on a relatively cool day, and this can lead to heatstroke or death in pets. On a 70-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 100 degrees in just 20 minutes.

Pets are more vulnerable to heatstroke than humans because they primarily rely on panting to regulate their body temperature and lack sweat glands throughout their bodies.

Brachiocephalic breeds (Short-nosed breeds) such as: Bulldogs (English and French), Pugs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers, Affenpinschers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Pekingese, Lhasa Apsos, and Bullmastiffs are some of the breeds that are more susceptible to having respiratory distress due to high outside temperatures. Older, younger, and ill pets are also at higher risk.

If you see a pet in a car that appears to be overheated: Contact local authorities immediately. Be safe out there everyone!

We are here Friday 7am to Monday 7pm 24 hours for any urgent care and emergency needs!

Reminder! It's National Pet Week May 4th- 10th.

Whether it's a wagging tail, a calming purr, bursts of play or just quiet companionship, pets bring us comfort, connection and happiness—often when we need it the most. But it's important to remember that this bond is a two-way street.

National Pet Week is our opportunity to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and remind everyone of the importance of providing them with the love and care they need to thrive.

A new poll from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) confirms what pet owners have long known: pets make our lives better, with 81% of respondents reporting that their pets had a positive impact on their mental health. Among them, 65% specifically credited their pets with reducing stress and anxiety, while adults 65 and older were especially likely to recognize the emotional benefits of pet companionship.

So, to say the least, THANK YOU TO OUR PETS! WE LOVE YOU!!!!!

We are open Friday 7am to Monday 7pm!

STORY and EDUCATION TIME! This sweetheart is Aurora, she is a 2 year old toy Australian Shepard. She was suspected to have been attacked by a bird of prey or another small animal and was brought in on urgent care with wounds around her neck and back area. She is recovering very well and with lots and lots of love from the staff here. We wish her a speedy and smooth recovery.

Most dogs and cats are large enough to be safe from hawks and owls. Even very small dogs may be too heavy for a hawk or owl to carry, although it’s still possible that large raptors might attack them. For instance, black-tailed jackrabbits can reach the weight of a small dog (6 pounds) and are a fairly common prey item for Red-tailed Hawks in the western United States, even though Red-tails top out at just over 3 pounds themselves. Golden Eagles, though far less common than Red-tailed Hawks, have been reported to hunt small dogs and cats occasionally.

But keep in mind that even if pets are safe from birds, they are in danger from foxes, coyotes, bears, raccoons, and even other pets, so it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on your pet when it’s outside.

If a pet is kept outdoors, a kennel with a roof can protect small dogs, not just from the elements, but from hawks and owls, other predators, and human dognappers. If you have a cat that enjoys the outdoors, consider building a catio to keep them safe from predators, and other animals safe from them.

In most cases, leaving baby animals alone is the best course of action. Wild animal mothers often leave their young for extended periods to feed, rest, or protect them from predators, and human interference can negatively impact their survival. If you are concerned about a baby animal, monitor it from a distance for 24-48 hours to see if the mother returns. If the animal is clearly injured or in immediate danger, contact local wildlife rehabilitation or animal control.

FRENCH BULLDOGS ARE THE #1 BREED IN AMERICA! (Probably because they're so darn cute!) This is Viktor, a frenchie that we saw on emergency for difficulty breathing. Brachycephalic breeds like french bulldogs, pugs, boston terriers, bulldogs, shih tzus, brussels griffons, plus more, are susceptible to having urgent respiratory distress, especially in the warmer months. Luckily, Viktor's parents recognized something wasn't right with the little guy and contacted us immediately. Their swift actions helped save his life.

On arrival, Viktor was in need of intubation (airway tube) to help him breath, as his airway was compromised. Viktor had a minor procedure at another clinic earlier that day and was just fine when he was discharged. Being a brachycephalic breed, Viktor has extremely small air passages, making normal breathing a challenge. Any irritation of any kind can cause the airway to swell, and in Viktor's case, or any brachycephalic breed, this could mean life or death.

In the warmer months of the year, when these breeds are panting and exercising, the chance for irritation to the airway can increase greatly. Surgical intervention can help them breath "a little bit better" by addressing their airway issues. This includes widening stenotic nares, shortening the elongated soft pallet, and removal of everted laryngeal saccules. Thankfully Viktor's mom and dad had this done when he was a younger pup, and this too saved his life in the long run.

Today Viktor is back home, enjoying all the attention life brings when you are the cutest thing on earth! We loved working with Viktor and his parents, and we are glad they are living their best lives! 😁 Please call us at 406-651-5615 FRIDAY through MONDAY with any questions.
