Gettysburg Carriage Co We are a small family business, who has been driving carriages for over 25 years.

10/02/2025

The Gettysburg Carriage Company would like to wish everyone a great New Year! We hope 2025 is promising for all our friends! We would like to make an announcement as 2025 begins and inform the public this will be our last year operating commercially. We will be closing in the beginning of 2026. It is unfortunate to open this year with this news, but over the few years our company has worked tirelessly to keep rolling with the punches. However, despite working hard and overcoming a hurtle back in 2022, our company had come to a decision at the end of 2024. The reason for this decision is due to a lack of help and resources. As well as new opportunities opening for us in a different direction. We are committed to fulfilling all commitments in 2025 and will be offering all our same services until January 2026. We want to thank everyone who has done business over the years! We appreciate every single person and company we’ve served! It has been an honor, and we won’t forget those we’ve met! The memories that our company has experienced over 35 years will be cherished.
Best Wishes,
The Gettysburg Carriage Co.

Howdy, everyone. We haven't made announcement until now due to working out some details. However, with spring rolling in, we've been getting a lot of messages and requests for our carriage services. It's hard to say, but our company with be taking a break over the next year (possibly two). We will not be operating our historical tours, country rides, or taking reservations for weddings. We'll still be doing some local fairs and other events, which we will share on the page. I do want to let folks know we are not closing the company either. We'll have another announcement this summer to let you guys find out what we've been up to! Thank you all for last year and the support! It's been rocky and hanging in there has proven to be worth it! We're getting excited about the future too and can't wait to share! God Bless!

Came to some big realizations done there, which I cant wait to apply to our horsemenship. You never stop learning! Thanks for inviting us done! Cal Middleton Horsemenship

Can you imagine working as a librarian on horseback?

Horse Librarians -
Pack Horse Librarians ride through the morning mist to begin their hard day’s work, long before the sun comes up, in the hills and creeks of Eastern Kentucky.
The riders will soon part ways and separately ride their mount into the winding and narrow paths that will eventually lead to a homestead.

"The way it worked was simple: The WPA paid the salaries for the librarians to maintain a headquarters library, usually at the county seat, and to carry books on horseback throughout the county. The Kentucky pack horse librarians were tough. They had to be, in order to travel atop horses and mules over the rockiest terrain, through all kinds of weather, carrying books and magazines up and down creek beds named Hell-for -Sartin, Troublesome, and Cut Shin because of their treacherous natures. The book women were dedicated. Although their salary was only $28 a month, they were proud of the work they did. Taking books [and magazines] to people who had never had access to them before was not only hard work, it was important work.”
