Alaska gardening friends: if you happen to be up and see this - and if you have plants outside - you might want to bring them in or cover them.

It’s 33 here and the sky is clear. We’re probably gonna have a hard freeze between now and morning. 😞

The one good thing? At least it doesn’t get dark so you can see to cover everything, right?

Mabel and Millie are as unimpressed as the rest of us.

We're gearing up for tomorrow's event - will you be joining us?

Typically, the Lady Homesteaders gatherings and classes are open to members only but tomorrow, we're opening it up to everyone!

Come spend the afternoon on the farm! Come to the farm at noon and bring a yummy dish to share (Hint: nobody cares if it's store bought - don't think you have to bring homemade bread topped with homemade, cultured butter and some spreadable homemade cheese - chips and salsa is fine by us!)

Bring a dish to share, a chair to sit on, and come ready to enjoy an incredible group of ladies who likely has a lot more in common with you than you think!

We're going to talk about what we want to learn for the rest of the year - we'll make a schedule, plan some classes, and even get some field trips in the works!

We have tons of fun, we always learn a lot, and we are building relationships that go far beyond the farm and a couple of hours per month.

Now that the expo is over, we get to go back to real life. Today it’s 60 quarts of broth made from the cow that was butchered for the expo. Seasoned with Baja Gold salt, the broth has bones, meat, and some organs. It’s gonna be amazing!

Also culturing cream for butter, reviving the Jun, sourdough starter, and milk and water kefir that were severely neglected during expo prep.

It’s sooo good to be back!

Well that was a crazy little wind funnel! I heard it coming. It picked up the tent and threw it right onto the greenhouse. Then it went around and ripped up plastic from the beds and headed off into the woods.

Shoot. 😭

I’ve heard them called dust devils. This one packed a wallop!

On the bright side: the tent fell in a way that it did not puncture the greenhouse plastic anywhere. I can’t believe it!

Funny story:

Today is nearly perfect. The sun is shining, it’s warm out, I get to spend the day working in the soil.

And … womp, womp ….

It’s fish fertilizer day. 🙈

So it looks amazing, it feels amazing, but good golly - it does not SMELL amazing!

🤣🙈🙃😬😳

We have a super cool announcement - I'm so excited, can you tell?

We've secured organic/transitional cherries, peaches, pears, and more from the lower 48 but it's way different that how we've done it in years past.

Here are the differences:

💥➡️ I will know EXACTLY where these were picked - the farm and their practices. I'll know the name of the farmer and the address of the farm.

💥➡️ They will be picked the day before the barge leaves - SPECIFICALLY FOR US. This means they will have less travel time than just about any fruit that comes to Alaska. No sitting around for days waiting to be shipped. They are coming from the pacific NW so that shortens the travel time even more!

💥➡️ We can get an almost unlimited supply but we will need to strategize to order in the very peak of the season when the produce is apt to be at its most hardy for shipping.

💥➡️ They will be either transitional (much less expensive) or certified organic. Transitional simply means that at one point the farm used to be conventional but is transitioning to organic. All practices are organic and must be for a certain time before they can be certified. They are as good as organic to me and much less expensive.

If you're interested in being on our list for the fruit, just check join our email list at commongroundalaska.com or get on our text service by texting your name to 206-759-8575.

Cherries are coming up very soon! Apricots likely won't be possible this year but hopefully in coming years.

What else would you like to see? Should we add some veggies? I'd love to see what else we can secure based on the needs of Alaskans.

Note: I won't be bringing things in that will compete with local farmers - things we can grow plenty of here. No potatoes, etc. Just the things that we either don't have enough of up here or that can't grow here anyway. :)

… and this would be why we don’t plant most things outside until after June 1.

However, if your garden doesn’t look great this am, there might be hope.

Once everything is pretty much thawed, give your garden a good soaking and let things be. Give the plants time to rehydrate and see how things go.
