I’ve started working a full time job. That means my availability to track is based off my work schedule. I don’t have consistent days off, they change by the week.

Another thing to keep in mind, we have to consider every side of tracking a lost pet. That includes the weather. When it’s negative degrees outside that puts not only myself and my partner at risk for frost bite, but also my K9. Same goes for the heat. If it’s really hot and humid out, that’s dangerous working conditions.

We will try our best to be accommodating and get out when we can, but we do ask that you have patience as we do have to schedule around work, weather etc.

Finding lost pets is similar yet different than finding lost humans.

When finding humans, the chances you’ll be able to actually get a visual and walk up to them is much greater. Although they could be scared or disoriented, they don’t tend to run away from you.

Lost pets are different. Though we use similar strategies when tracking them, pets will tend to run away. They get stuck in a flight mode. With lost pets we focus more on paying attention to detail. We not only are tracking but also looking for signs they have been in the area. We look for p**p and paw prints. If we find those things we then have to determine how fresh they are. It’s similar to grid searches.

When we go out and track for a lost pet, I pay extreme attention to how my dog is behaving. She has different behaviors based off of if we are on the trail, how fresh it is, how old it is, how close we are to the pet etc. Based off how she is acting I determine if we continue, if I send the owners out in front to survey the area, or if it’s in the lost pets best interest to stop so we don’t push it out of its comfort zone.

It does sound like an easy thing to do but it is more difficult than people realize. Not having a physical find takes a mental toll on my dog, as well as myself. We strive to have a find but I know realistically with lost pets it’s low. We can narrowed down a huge area to a specific area but pets keep moving or stay hidden. So far we have only had 2 sightings of a lost pet. The rest of the time, we get to a specific area and have to stop so we don’t chase them or scare them more. Later after we leave, trail cam evidence or sightings confirms we were in the correct spot.

It’s hard. We put a lot of emotion into what we do. We want to have a find and bring home your lost pet but a lot of time we get you to the area and leave, hoping you are able to get a sighting. I offer my help if you are able to get a sighting. We go above and beyond to assist in any way we can.

With temperatures dropping, every minute counts! Some animals are more equipped to handle the cold but others are not.

Not only do they run the risk of freezing, but they can also get frostbite on their paws.

If you find yourself in a position where you need to find your pet this winter, don’t wait. We would rather deploy, be on our way and you find them, then waiting a few days to make the call. Much like lost humans, every minute counts during the winter.

I’m so happy to announce after 2 weeks of adventure, Tito has safely been caught! HUGE thank you to all the organizations involved with helping out.

I genuinely appreciate his family trusting my dog and I to assist in locating him. We covered many miles over a few days. In the end, it came down to him being hungry and his sister convincing him to come back to everyone.

10/7 we were asked to come back out to track for Tito.

They had a thermal drone come out Monday night in hope that there would be a sighting to start from. Unfortunately, there were no sightings so we decided to start at the park where he originally ran off from since that’s where my dogs scent trail stopped Sunday.

Upon starting my dog, she almost immediately made a B line for the creek that’s right next to the park. She’s not overly thrilled with water, so the fact that she jumped in and began sticking her nose in the water heading up stream told me she was on Tito’s scent. We followed the stream up to bridge that wasn’t possible for me to crawl under but my dog insisted on going under it. After carefully evaluating the situation and taking my dogs indications into consideration we decided we would move locations upstream to see if she was still interested in traveling that way or if she would indicate the scent was now down stream.

After a quick 4 minute drive to Kalmbach memorial park, I started my dog and she again wanted to leap back in the creek and head upstream. She was beginning to show stronger interest in her trail. We continued to follow her until we got to the back of someone’s private property. We had to stop to see if we could find out who knows it to get permission to enter. We will not just invade someone’s property without permission. After a little break, we were able to speak with some very nice workers at a municipal building near the park. They were beyond helpful in helping us get in touch with the owners. We were able to get permission from the owners to enter and continue our tracking. While on the phone with them, they mentioned they had a trail cam picture of the dog.

Again, we took a bit of a break for my dog to cool down, get some water before working again and also talking with the land owner. Once I started my dog again, she immediately took us to the creek and dragged me up the creek until she quickly whipped around, pulling up hill and down the other side eventually connecting with a finger of the creek heading down stream. She started to become really animated and engaged as she pulled us down stream now almost as if indicating we were approaching the lost pet. I immediately stopped her and turned to speak with the owners. I suggested at this point we don’t continue to track because I’m confident we are on the freshest scent trail of Tito and I’m worried we would push him out of his comfort zone by continuing. The owners agreed and we stopped.

By this point, we’ve covered a huge area in Macungie and as of 10/7 we able to narrow it down to a much smaller area to look in.

They are continuing their search on the owners property.

10/5 we continued the search for Tito.

We returned to the location we stopped at the previous day and continued the trail from there. We had a little bit of a slower start that morning but she kicked it into gear. Around 1030 there was a sighting of Tito in a neighbor nearby, said to be traveling towards the railroad tracks.

My dog’s trail took us miles along the railroad until we ended back at Macungie Memorial Park. We trailed a total of 4 hours and 56 minutes, covering 7.43 miles. Once my dog led us back to the beginning of where it all began, she started to go in circles. Our best guess at that point was Tito is in the area close to where he took off from. Unfortunately, there was a huge dog show going on which made it extremely hard for my dog to pinpoint exactly where Tito was hiding. We believe Tito didn’t stay in one place due to all the noise and traffic it caused him to keep moving.

After the second long day of trailing, as a group we decided it was best to stop knowing my dog narrowed down the area for the owners to keep searching in. With all the commotion going on beteen the dog show, traffic, trains, and people out looking for him, the chances of us actually getting a visual on Tito were very slim. He is not a fan of out noises.

At the end of the day, we were able to confidently give the owners a smaller area to keep looking in, including finding dog prints along a creek nearby.
