π§ Tonka π§
Everyone meet Tonka! We got Tonka a few weeks ago from a kind woman who pulled him from not-so-ideal living conditions. Please read π₯°
Tonka is a miniature horse with a genetic condition called Dwarfism. Dwarfism is a serious ethical & welfare concern for ponies, it is a genetic condition - NOT a breed! Joint abnormalities, skeletal deformities & chronic pain can accompany intentional preceding of dwarf ponies. Tonka is about 26" tall.
Although some dwarf ponies have very short life spans, Tonka is already 13 years old & is a calm lovable companion that deserves all the scratches & love that our program can give him. For being a dwarf, his upper half - especially his mouth & teeth - are pretty well formed! The main issue is his legs and hooves. On top of his genetic condition, Tonka was left inside a concrete stall for 3 years, which rolled his hoof walls to add to his poor leg conformation. With consistent farrier work, we are working on getting those legs straightened out! He is also on a nice senior feed to try to put some muscle & weight on his topline, with careful consideration to keep his weight under control to protect his little legs.
We will have a informational sheet out at any zoos that Tonka attends & are more than happy to answer questions you may have about him! And yes...we already bought him a nice dog ramp to get in the trailer π₯°π He jumps in and out of the back of vehicles for transportation (he rode home in my minivan) but I would prefer not to put any undue stress on his legs if possible.
Tonka IS a cutie for sure, but please remember that responsible & ethical breeding should come before "the smaller the cuter" attempts & that the health & welfare should be the priority of any breeding practices.
