Finished up this American flag skull for Mike Senchak! This was a lot of fun to free hand and carve! You would think that a sketching on a flag that is waving or showing motion would be easy because none of the lines are straight, but it’s more challenging than you’d think! Every line has to look right from every angle, and the stars have to show depth moving not only with the “motion” of the flag, but have to be sized and angled appropriately moving from the foreground back away from the focal point. I really enjoy doing the flag skulls and hope some more folks do them! They’re always a crowd pleaser!

A big congratulations to my cousin Brady Barnes on killing an absolute HAMMER red stag in Texas on opening day! The family farm is adjacent to a high fence preserve and occasionally they have some animals find their way out! In Texas any non native wildlife is fair game any time of year and he sure capitalized on it this morning! Congratulations Brady!!!

This is a project I was super excited for! This deer was hit by a friends wife in her ford SUV. Instead of leaving it on the side of the road they brought it to me! They originally asked for just a ford logo on it, but I was able to talk them into letting me get creative with it!

Ford did a powder blue in the 60s that I like a lot that was called “arcadian blue”, and i wanted to try to work that in somehow but wasn’t sure how to do it tastefully because I didn’t want it to be super bright. I wanted it to resemble a patina’d classic car body as far as finish. This skull was cleaned, carved, coated in the Arcadian paint code then we added real rust by applying ground steel and iron powder, then activating. From looking brand new to rusted out only takes about 24 hours. Super happy with how this one came out, it’s really neat to have a vision then see it come to life layer by layer!

A big thank you to Leonard Truck & Trailer Inc. and Basic Animal Health for their continued support and business! Last week we finished up another 4 outstanding longhorn skulls for The Homecoming Reining Series! These awards were presented to the Open Derby level 1 and 3 winners as well as non pro derby level 1 and 3 winners! This show we really focused on a more simple color scheme of classic black and white over an aged bronze finish and the results were phenomenal. This look really allowed the carving to shine! Congratulations to both recipients of the open derby today, we look forward to seeing who wins the non pro division as well!

We would also like to thank Elaina Eppinger Photography as well as Memory Mill Photography for the great photography work they do and helping to make our work look its best!

🛑STOP SCROLLING🛑

One of our favorite things each fall as a taxidermist is hearing everyone’s story. Every deer, every sit, every detail.

I remember the days when we were kids,we’d go to the bait shop in the summer time and we’d ask the owner where the fish were biting. Everyone that got into some good fish always told the bait shop guy so naturally he always knew where they were and what they were biting on, depending on the time of year. He always smiled when he told us that weeks update, but now I understand why. Most times we’re one of the firsts to hear their story, sometimes before even their wives or friends, and we’ve grown to appreciate you all allowing us to be a part of your story. This year one of the things we would like to do is get a short minute or two clip of our clients sharing their story if they’re willing, and sharing it with you.
Not sure what to call these clips yet, maybe stories from the swing? Who knows!

But for now please enjoy the first of many, Mr. John Foty with his first ever buck, and second deer at the young age of 67! Last year was Johns first year hunting! Congrats John!

Every year for the last 4 or 5 years this young lady is the first customer of the season to punch a tag! Her dad Joe Toman does a great job at making opportunity early for her and she doesn’t seem to miss with her cross bow! This style carving is one I think we’re going to start calling the “punched tag” carving so if any of you would like one let us know, this theme has been popular the last couple years! Everything you need to stay legal and display your trophy including name, state, county, year and confirmation number, but incorporated tastefully in a skull you’re proud to show people!
