As flowers bloom, so do risks for our pets, with plenty of opportunity for them to breathe in particles, scratch an eye, poke a paw, or even get snagged by a branch or thorn, all of which could potentially lead to infections.

Infections can be sneaky subtle—If your pet is not acting right and you are not sure what it is, get them checked! Like with most conditions, the sooner we treat an infection, the better your pet will feel.

Tick season is definitely here in Central Oregon, and we are seeing an increase in ticks on dogs along with more positive tick-borne disease testing this year.

Ticks are no longer just a concern in heavily wooded areas. They can be found on trails, in brushy neighborhoods, near rivers, and even in some backyards. A recently developed local tick tracker is helping identify some of the higher-risk hiking and recreation areas in our region. Central Oregon Tick Tracker Story

We are especially concerned because many tick-borne illnesses in dogs can start with vague signs such as:
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Limping or shifting leg lameness
• Decreased appetite
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Joint pain

Some dogs may test positive before showing obvious clinical signs at all.

The good news is that prevention works very well. We strongly recommend:
✔ Year-round tick prevention
✔ Checking pets after hikes or outdoor activities
✔ Keeping grass and brush trimmed around the home
✔ Discussing annual tick-borne disease screening with your veterinarian

The Companion Animal Parasite Council is also forecasting widespread tick activity across the U.S. this year and continues to recommend consistent tick prevention for dogs.

If you have found ticks on your pet recently or have questions about prevention options, feel free to reach out to us at Central Oregon Animal Hospital.

🍔 A burger… made their way 🐾
Today is National Hamburger Day, but your pet doesn’t need the drive-thru version to feel included.

In fact, many classic burger ingredients—like onions, garlic, and heavy seasoning—can upset their stomach (or worse). The good news? You can still treat them—just a little differently. Think:
🥩 Plain, lean protein
🥕 Pet-safe veggies
🚫 No added salt, spices, or toppings

Because the best treats aren’t the ones we share…they’re the ones we choose with them in mind. ❤️
If you’re ever unsure what’s safe, we’re always here to help!

It’s International Chihuahua Appreciation Day! While some may think “Chihuahuas are all the same” we know that’s not true (ok…they are all a little sassy…in the best way).

Do you have a chihuahua in your life? Which type?

🤡 Clown “I exist purely for entertainment (and mild destruction).”
👑Tiny Tyrant: “I run this house. Everyone else just lives here.”
✨Icon: “I am not a dog. I am a lifestyle.”
All of the above
