Today I drove to the place. The place where he died. I played one of our favorite songs at max volume. I tried to take everything in. The sun. The clouds. The sky. The birds. It made me feel a little better to know that the last things he saw were all beautiful. Glorious, even. He always saw the beauty in things, and I'm glad in his last moments on this earth, he was surrounded by it.

Happy Birthday, Steve. Thank you for teaching me to always see the beauty.

Picture a wave. In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it's there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It's a wave.

And then it crashes in the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. You know it's one conception of death for Buddhists: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it's supposed to be.

My amazing friend made these photo tails to hang from the balloons at Steve’s memorial. Aoki saved them and put them all up on her wall. I just walked into her room and took a really close look at them for the first time. Holy s**t, you guys. All of the phases of life with him, all laid out to ponder. It was excruciating and beautiful all at the same time. I miss you, Steve. I still can’t believe you’re really gone.
