Well, even though we were already beyond capacity, we took in another pup from an emergency situation this past weekend.
We received a message from a young woman who had taken in this little dog after finding him lying in the middle of the road, covered in flies, with blood coming from his mouth. She had been caring for him for the past two weeks and assumed he had been hit by a car and suffered a broken hind leg. We had her bring him to us and immediately took him to our vet where an exam revealed a different story.
His leg wasn't broken at all but his hip has been dislocated for so long, and so severely, that it can no longer be repaired. You can see the divot on his hindquarters where the dislocation is and he has completely lost muscle mass. Unfortunately, the only humane option now is amputation so he can finally be free of the pain he has likely been living with for quite some time. (He also has a foreign object lodged inside him that we have not been able to identify at this time.)
Based on his injuries, his condition when he was found, and everything we know about his situation, we strongly believe he may have been thrown from a vehicle. Whatever happened to him, it's clear that life has not been kind to this little guy. We named him KNOX because he has taken some hard knocks in life, but things are going to get much better from here.
The good news is that aside from his injured hip, Knox has a sweet and loving spirit. He wants nothing more than to be held or on a lap. He is young and tries to play a little but it's clear that he’s in pain. He has a difficult time getting comfortable and shakes when he tries to lie down. He’s also way too thin and is gratefully eating everything his foster family gives him.
This week Knox will have the surgery he needs, and once he recovers we'll begin the search for the loving home he has always deserved. A home where he will be wanted, cared for, and never have to wonder if he's safe again.
