We do not sell pullets or laying hens, and that’s intentional.

Let’s be real about buying hens 🐓

I’m going to be a little more blunt here, because I’d rather you have the truth than a sales pitch.

Most hens you see being sold fall into one of a few categories:

❌ Culls (didn’t make the cut for breeding or production)
📦 Abandoned projects (“I decided not to continue this line”)
💸 Backyard reality checks (those eggs ended up being the most expensive eggs ever 😅)

None of that makes them bad birds, but it does mean there’s usually a reason they’re leaving.

From a breeder standpoint, your best hens are your program. You don’t sell your top producers… you build around them.

That’s why at Blue Ribbon Creek:

🐣 Chicks are straight run 99.9% of the time
🐓 Roosters may be available occasionally during grow-outs
🏡 Hens stay here doing their job

If you’re looking for instant eggs, I get it. Just know that “ready-to-lay” doesn’t always mean “long-term productive.”

If you want to build a flock you actually know and trust from day one, starting with chicks is the better route and that’s what we do best. 💛

🐔 Creekside Update from Blue Ribbon Creek & Co. 🌾

We made a “quick trip” to the livestock auction yesterday for research purposes…

…and chicken math did what it does best. 😅

The original plan was to bring home a few hatching eggs, but when a group of Polish chicks went up for less than the cost of eggs, we couldn’t pass that up. So the flock grew a little sooner than expected.

These little ones are supposed to be 2–3 weeks old, but they’re definitely on the small side and came home needing some extra attention. One gave us a bit of a scare, but after some supportive care (yolk and electrolytes), it pulled through.

As of now, everyone is still with us, and we’re in full “extra care” mode… keeping them warm, hydrated, and monitored closely. That’s part of working with livestock, sometimes they just need a little extra help getting back on their feet.

On a more personal note, our sweet Roxy is nearing the end of her journey. She has a chain of mammary tumors and has slowed down significantly over the past couple of weeks. Today was the first day she didn’t get up to greet us, which told us more than anything else could.

She’s been a steady presence here for many years, and right now our focus is on keeping her comfortable, surrounded by familiar things, and very loved.

That’s part of homestead life too… loving animals through every stage, even the hard ones.

We’ll keep sharing updates as these little ones grow and (hopefully) start thriving.

Thanks for being part of our little corner of the creek. 💛

We've still got babies!

UFD Straight Run Olive Egger Chicks
Hatched 4/1

These chicks are from blue/green egg stock and, if pullets, should lay olive to dark green eggs.

Pictured are eggs from my full flock.

It’s chick season… and everyone wants pullets. Trust me, SAME.😂

But here’s the honest truth about why most backyard/local breeders don’t offer sexed chicks:

Sexing day-old chicks is not as simple as it sounds. True vent sexing requires specialized training and experience, and even then it comes with risks - done incorrectly, it can seriously injure or even kill a chick. That’s not a risk most small, ethical breeders are willing to take. Even when chicks are sexed, it’s important to know that vent sexing is not 100% accurate. Mistakes happen, even with professionals. Just look at all the local chicken groups asking if their TSC chick is a rooster🫣

There’s also feather sexing, but this only works for specific breeds and crosses (fast feathering + slow feathering), and only between 1-3 days old. Miss that window, or use it on the wrong breed, and it’s simply not accurate.

The exception is autosexing or sex-linked breeds, where males and females hatch with distinct visible characteristics (Welsummers, Legbars, Barred Rocks, Zombies). There is also DNA sexing, but it comes with added cost per chick & most people aren’t willing to pay the higher price that comes with it. On top of that, collecting and submitting samples for large numbers of chicks just isn’t practical for most small backyard breeders.

And here’s the bigger picture… Large commercial hatcheries are able to offer “sexed pullets” because they process chicks at a massive scale, but that often comes with the harsh reality that day-old cockerels are routinely culled (destroyed) because they aren’t profitable.

So when you support a local breeder, you’re supporting a more ethical, small-scale approach to poultry - one that values every chick.🤍

🐣 Olive Egger Hatching Eggs Available 🥚

We currently have fresh Olive Egger hatching eggs available from our flock here at Blue Ribbon Creek in Bay Minette.

These eggs come from our:

Black Copper Marans rooster
×
Easter Egger hens that lay blue to blue-green eggs

This cross produces Olive Egger chickens, known for laying beautiful olive colored eggs.

The chick pictured in the photos hatched from the same cross as these eggs, so you can see what some of the babies look like.

📍 Pickup in Bay Minette

I will also be in Pensacola on Thursday if that helps anyone who is farther away.

Eggs are collected fresh and left unwashed to preserve the natural bloom for incubation.
