James Nolan Construction

James Nolan Construction We are as confident preserving a 200 year old structure as we are building a complex contemporary home.

We work on a small number of projects at a time so that we can devote our total focus to the project. We certainly have the ability to handle multiple projects, but we have chosen to operate in a more detailed fashion.

The finishes at the Haggard Residence are exceptional. and .tx have curated such an amazing end result. As we approach the finish line, we all take moments to look at the finish and say," f**k, that is amazing." Mike LePine is an absolute genius.
Surround yourself with people smarter and more artistic and you will never be disappointed.

Many times, the original floors simply can not bear a drum sander. Our Crocheron House project is an example. Face nailed floors from 1857. We have to sand with rotex Sanders tge hard way. It's definitely not fun, but it's really the only way. This is REAL preservation in action. The old man even got to help for 3 hours.

This is the job where I graduated from a hippie carpenter to a builder. Not a home builder or a spec builder but a Builder. A proper builder. Where i was taught about mas, scale, proportion, right and wrong. I was taught about real architecture and not just how to build properly but why. Why the details were not just crucial and exacting but proper details. Etiquette. When I made a mistake , I explained why they were incorrect and not simply incorrect.
I have said that this was the moment in my career that was the most important.
Randolph Martz was the architect, and he changed my life. Randolph was exacting, unforgiving, ferocious, intimidating, thoughtful, and a great teacher.
Randolph passed away last November, and I only found out about his death yesterday. I am deeply saddened that I found out so late. His passing leaves an unfathomable hole in the soul of Charleston, as well as the world of proper architecture.
I will cherish the knowledge he shared with me and the projects that I was trusted to bring into the physical world from his beautiful drawings.
Cheers, Randolph. Your passion lives on in so many places and people.

Better here or here?
It is one thing to have a hands on client. It is another thing to have a client that can cut, weld and grind and finish away a problem on transom hardware. Our hats off to .tx.
Not a single detail missed on this project, thanks to him.

Lesd abatement has begun on the Fannie Davis Pavilion at Auditorium Shores. We will be performing restoration services on the pavilion to make sure that she will be around for people to enjoy for many years.

"As the first public structure to be built on the lakeshore, the gazebo was made possible through a combination of community fundraising and donations of materials and labor by local contractors. NAWIC president Loretta “Lori” Nill recruited her husband to draw plans for the octagonal structure, which evolved from a heavy mushroom-shaped dome into an exuberant white canopy composed of folded plates and ridges in the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid. The canopy is perched upon a base of limestone-clad angled columns and concrete benches in a nod to traditional rustic park architecture.

Supported by curved glued-laminated (glulam) wood beams, the canopy and turret exemplify the Googie style, a branch of mid-century architecture whose streamlined forms were inspired by Space Age fervor (it’s no coincidence that the gazebo was completed the same year as the Apollo 11 moon landing). The upswept planes of the roof end in a turret that was later capped with a clear bubble dome.

Over the years, members of the NAWIC have remained ardent in their protection of the gazebo, overseeing numerous repairs and staving off threats of demolition. In 2020, their efforts were rewarded with the structure’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places, ensuring that this fanciful floral folly will continue to bloom for generations to come. – Bud Franck"
