Silver Dollar Road Animal Services Case Update

Over the past several weeks, Animal Services has received over a dozen reports from residents in the Silver Dollar Road area concerning a roaming goat, known as Billy. These incidents occurred on more than half a dozen private properties and included: an elderly resident relaxing on her front porch when Billy attempted to knock her over, a hospice worker who was cornered in a yard with no safe exit, and another homeowner who reported Billy trying to force his way through a glass door.

Our enforcement team worked extensively with Billy’s owners in an effort to resolve the issue. Multiple citations were issued, and numerous discussions were held about securing the animal and preventing further problems. Despite these repeated efforts, the situation continued.

Today, following another joint response by Animal Services and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office to remove Billy from a resident’s property, the owners agreed to rehome him. He has now been placed on a farm, where he will have the space to roam safely without creating a nuisance for neighbors or posing a risk to the community.

We thank the residents of Silver Dollar Road for their patience as we worked to bring this matter to a close. This case highlights the importance of responsible animal ownership and the commitment of Animal Services to ensuring community safety and animal welfare.

More Than Strays: Animal Services in Action

On August 25, 2025, Lamar County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a call unlike the usual — a dog trapped inside the attic of a barn. When Deputies Walker and Thiel arrived, they quickly realized this situation needed more than just law enforcement. That’s when they called for support from Lamar County Animal Services.

Officer Hannah Sargent and Director Tyler White responded to the scene, where deputies had already used a ladder to confirm a brown-and-white pit bull had somehow climbed into the attic space. The entry point wasn’t obvious, though a tall stack of cinder blocks outside the barn seemed to be the most likely route.

With teamwork at the center, Officer Sargent climbed into the attic to carefully approach the frightened dog. Once secure, she guided the dog toward the opening, where deputies and Animal Services staff worked together to safely lower her to the ground. What could have been a dangerous situation ended with the dog unharmed and in safe hands.

This incident is a clear reminder that animal control is about far more than picking up stray dogs or responding to barking complaints. Our officers work side by side with law enforcement to rescue animals, solve complex situations, and protect both pets and people in our community.

Great teamwork by Officer Sargent, Deputy Walker, and Deputy Thiel in ensuring this rescue ended with a happy and safe outcome.

Animal Services Means Moo-re Than Stray Dogs

Date: August 21, 2025
Location: Lamar County, GA
Area: Five Points Road & Hwy 19/41

On August 21, 2025, Lamar County Dispatch received a call regarding two cows roaming along the roadside near Five Points Road and Hwy 19/41. The caller recognized both the traffic hazard and the potential danger to the animals, given how close they were to a major highway.

Lamar County Sheriff’s Office and Lamar County Animal Services quickly responded. With the help of nearby neighbors, the cows were identified and traced back to their pasture. The owners were out of town, but a friend had already secured the animals by the time our search was underway.

We spoke with the owners and extended our thanks to the neighbors who stepped in to assist. Incidents like this highlight that our role extends beyond companion animals—our priority is always community safety and animal well-being.

Moving forward, we’ll be able to contact the owners directly should another issue arise and work together to ensure the cows remain safely confined.

A great example of teamwork in action between the community, our team, and our Lamar County Georgia Sheriff's Office!

From Tragedy to Triumph: A Story of Justice and Hope

In February 2025, Lamar County Animal Services responded to one of the most heartbreaking cases we've ever encountered. A call to 911 led us to a home in Milner, Georgia, where several puppies were found confined inside a sealed plastic tote—without food, water, or ventilation. They were malnourished, neglected, and suffering. Tragically, five puppies had already lost their lives.

But four survived.

Thanks to the quick response of our team, the support of the Lamar County Sheriff's Office, and the compassionate care provided by Barnesville Animal Hospital and The Dolly Goodpuppy Society, those four puppies were given a second chance. They were bathed, fed, nurtured, and loved—finally experiencing the kindness they had been denied.

Today, we are proud to share that each of those four puppies has been rehomed into a loving family. Their journey from suffering to safety is a testament to what our community can accomplish when we come together.

The case has now been officially closed by the Sixth District Towaliga Judicial Circuit, Lamar County Superior Court, with charges including five counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and four counts of Cruelty to Animals. Justice was served.

At Lamar County Animal Services, we believe that every animal deserves dignity, compassion, and protection. Cruelty to animals is not just a violation of the law—it’s a violation of our shared humanity. As pet owners, you carry a moral, ethical, and legal responsibility to care for the lives entrusted to you.

In the most severe cases, we work hand-in-hand with law enforcement to ensure that those who commit acts of cruelty are held accountable. Whether the harm causes temporary pain or permanent damage—or ends a life—we stand firm in our mission to protect the voiceless.

Together, we are building a community that is Lamar County Strong. With your continued support, we can ensure that every animal has a chance at a better life.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in this journey—from the first responders to the veterinary staff, rescue partners, and the families who opened their hearts and homes. You are the reason these puppies now have a future.

On July 22, 2025, a traveler passing through Lamar County spotted something unusual in the woods off Parker Branch Road. About six yards from the street, a dog stood still, tethered to a tree. On closer inspection, the traveler discovered he had been tied with an electrical cord—no food, no water, and no nearby homes—and left in extreme summer heat.

The temperature that day was 95°F with a heat index of 109.5°F. Without immediate intervention, this dog’s life would have ended in pain and suffering. Acting quickly, the traveler freed him, offered water, and placed him in her air-conditioned car before contacting Lamar County Animal Services.

Officer H. Sargent responded to the call, documenting the scene and evaluating Tucker’s condition. Given his poor health and the Lamar County Animal Shelter being closed to intake at this time - T. White, Director of Lamar County Animal Services, coordinated with W. Perdue, Director of City of Barnesville Animal Control, to provide temporary housing. Through this mutual aid agreement, Tucker was safely transported to the City of Barnesville Animal Shelter to complete the mandatory three-day stray hold.

The traveler, already calling him Tucker, couldn’t stop thinking about him. Less than 24 hours later, she called back—not to check on him, but to adopt him. On July 25, Tucker was officially released to his new family.

Today, Tucker is safe, healthy, and beginning a new chapter filled with love, comfort, and care. His rescue is a powerful reminder that cruelty and neglect have no place in our community—and that one person’s compassion can change a life forever.

A message to the public:
Animal abandonment is not only cruel—it is illegal. Leaving a pet tied up or without basic needs is a crime in Georgia. If information links an abandoned animal back to an owner, we will pursue charges. If you can no longer care for your pet, there are safe, humane options: contact your local shelter, rescue group, or veterinary office for guidance.

To Tucker’s rescuer and new family: your kindness turned tragedy into hope. We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing Tucker thrive in the home he was meant to have.

If you witness or suspect animal cruelty, report it immediately. Together, we can protect those who cannot protect themselves.

On April 12, 2025, Lamar County Animal Services opened its doors with a mission to serve our community and its animals. This past week, we proudly hosted our very first spay and neuter clinic—right here at our shelter—through a new partnership with Fix-A-Pet. This partnership brings affordable spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and limited veterinary care directly to our citizens, making it easier than ever to keep pets healthy and prevent unwanted litters.

Our inaugural event was a true success: 19 out of 19 animals received high-quality veterinary care without a single major incident. From early morning until late afternoon, Dr. Vaughn and her dedicated Fix-A-Pet team worked tirelessly, demonstrating the patience, skill, and efficiency it takes to perform such a large number of surgeries in just one day.

Community feedback was positive, with many attendees sharing that the online registration process was quick and simple. Like any new program, we identified areas for improvement—and we’re committed to making each future clinic even smoother.

We extend heartfelt thanks to our early morning volunteers who kept traffic flowing and helped pets and people get where they needed to be. Without this kind of community support, events like these would be a challenge to coordinate.

We’re also deeply grateful to Lauren Warburton of the Thomasville Humane Society—not only for her ongoing connection and guidance, but for making the long drive to be here for our very first clinic. Seeing her in person for this milestone meant a great deal to us.

We’re not stopping here—two more clinic dates are already on the calendar: August 25th and September 15th. If you have a pet, or know a friend, neighbor, or coworker who does, please share this information. It might be the resource they need.

Together, we can make a lasting difference for pets, their families, and our community.
