Update: adopted!

Baltimore, MD

Milo is a scared little guy, initially, but comes around quickly once he knows he is safe and his humans are not going to hurt him.

Milo came to us from a shelter in WV where he was adopted to an elderly owner with dementia as a little puppy. His new Mom used to twirl little patches of his hair into mats and pull on them. He hated that and would snap at her. So the family returned him back to the shelter when he came to our rescue.

Milo is a 1-year old Pekingese and Chihuahua mix. He is a bit overweight at this point but we are working on getting him a trimmer by cutting back on his food and more exercise. He already has lost a little bit of weight.

Milo is up to date on vaccines, neutered, on flea/tick and heartworm prevention, and is micro-chipped.

Milo is crate-trained, and is perfecting his house-training with supervision, and is doing well.

Milo currently lives with dogs that range between 8 lbs to 45 lbs and has done well with them. He was best buds with another little dog who was adopted. They had fun chasing each other and sharing toys to play tug. We think he would love to have a little playmate, but he can also be an only pup in the home to soak up all the attention.
He plays with his stuffies and enjoys chewing on his chew toys.

Milo loves belly rubs and will nudge your hand to get petted once he feels safe. He is a sweet little guy, but has his limits, especially when it comes to being petted on his back. He was very nervous about being petted on his back initially and would grumble to let us know he had enough. He now is fine with it. We are sure it was because his previous owner would twirl his hair into mats and pull on them.

Milo has been around an 11-year old girl and totally LOVES her. He would bring his toys to her and wanting to be petted by her. We believe he would do really well with older kids in a home.

Milo sleeps in his crate at night and does well in it when his family has to leave the home.

Update: adopted

Baltimore, MD

Please read full details about Marley before reaching out to adopt him!!

Marley is the most adorable and fun big fella. His parents are a Great Pyrenees and Maremma Sheepdog who are working farm dogs who range between 110 and 150 lbs. So it is to be expected that Marley will also range around 125-150 lbs once fully grown.

It is important to us that Marley will go to a home with an experienced owner of guarding dogs who are used often on farms due to their protective temperament.
This breed will not do well in apartments or city life.

The potential adopter needs to be aware that Marley needs continuous socialization with people of all kinds, places and things during the first 1-2 years of his life.
This breed is highly protective of his family and environment, that is what they are breed for.

They require experienced owners who understand their breed-specific needs.
They need a confident and consistent leader who can establish clear boundaries and provide appropriate socialization.
If not properly managed, their protective instincts can lead to unwanted behaviors.

Great Pyrenees can be challenging to train due to their independent and strong-willed nature, a trait stemming from their breeding as livestock guardians. They were bred to make their own decisions, which can translate to stubbornness in training. While they are intelligent, they can easily become bored with repetitive exercises.
The main thing that you will need to spend time on with your Great Pyrenees is proper training and socialization. The Great Pyrenees tends to do very well around cats and other smaller dogs, but often don't do well with same s*x dominant breed dogs.

Great Pyrenees can be good house dogs for the right owners, but they require specific considerations due to their size, temperament, and guarding instincts. While generally calm and gentle with their families, they are large, independent, and have a strong protective instinct, which can lead to challenges in an urban environment.

Great Pyrenees dogs typically form strong bonds with their entire family, not just one person. While they are known for their independent nature and protective instincts, they are also affectionate and gentle with those they consider part of their "flock". Early socialization and consistent training are important to help them bond with everyone in the household.

Grooming a Great Pyrenees at home involves regular brushing, bathing when necessary, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. While they are known for their self-cleaning coats, periodic grooming helps manage shedding and maintain a healthy coat and skin.

Now since we have covered more specifics of such breed, here is more information about Marley:
Marley is currently 4 months old and weighs 40 lbs. Again, he will be an X-large dog weighing between 125 and 150 lbs once fully grown.
These big dogs will eat a lot!!! So please keep that in mind.

Marley is currently fostered in Lock Haven, PA as an inside dog. He has lived prior to rescue outside with his parents guarding livestock. So EVERYTHING is new to him at this point.

His foster Mom has reported this about Marley so far:
- confidently walking out the doorway to get outside.
- chasing a large tennis ball and bringing it back a couple times.
- staying much calmer and relaxed in his crate even when “mom’s“ home and also when she is away.
- no potty accidents inside the home or inside his crate 🤩
- confidently eating his meals all at once.
- trying his best to learn what the word “off” means. "Mom says I’m too big to jump on her but I only do it 4 or 5 times and only when I’m excited. I’ll keep working on this one!"

Currently, Marley lives with some small dogs inside the home who have vision impairments, and one large male dog who also has vision impairments. He is very friendly and excited to be around them, and yet very gentle.
He is super-friendly, but on the shy side as he is learning the ropes. He needs a little encouragement to get used to new things like hearing voices and images moving on the TV.

With the right owners, we know he will be the most loving dog who will adjust quickly.

Marley is up to date on vaccines, microchipped, on flea/tick and heartworm preventatives.
He is too young to be neutered. The vet has recommended due to the large breed to hold off with neuter until he is at least 1 year old to allow the growth plates to close and avoid health issues later in life. A $100 refundable neuter deposit is required in addition to the adoption fee.

His video can be found here: https://youtu.be/02DsnA4Y1XY

If you are interested in Marley after you read all about him and the breed, please reach out and request an adoption application at [email protected]

Update: adopted!

Baltimore, MD

Lucas was picked up as a stray dog by animal control and ended up at the shelter. He was a matted and scared little guy while there. No one ever came to reclaim him so he went to rescue.

Lucas is a darling 1-year old Miniature Schnauzer and Shih Tzu mix who weighs 19 lbs.
He is neutered, micro-chipped, up to date on vaccines, and on heartworm, flea- and tick preventatives.

Lucas is house-trained and crate-trained. He knows how to sit and stay, and will come if called.

This little fella is total love-bug and the typical Velcro dog who will follow you everywhere. He will hop up on your lap to get some cuddles any chance he gets. He also likes to give kisses.
Nothing makes Lucas happier than being with his owner, or being near him. He gets a bit nervous initially when he is left alone inside the create when his humans leave. But quickly he is able to calm down and then gets super-excited when his people return.

Lucas gets along well with other dogs. He prefers to play with dogs around his size or a bit smaller. He enjoys cuddling up and napping with his playmates.

Lucas walks well on the leash. He enjoys car rides. He loves playing with his toys and chew on special treats. He can also entertain himself with toys if there is no playmate around. He is great at fetching toys and bringing them back to his person to toss again, and of course, to play some tug.

Lucas is a docile and sweet boy. He does well meeting new people.

Update: adopted!

Carlton needs our help!!

Baltimore/Catonsville, MD --- Courtesy Post

Someone found Carlton in Baltimore. He was running terrified in a park in the city. After some avoiding, he settled down next to a bench with a leash and collar tied to it and let out a heart breaking howl. The leash had been chewed through and we assume someone tied him up and left him there.

The finder was able to capture the very reluctant guy, secured him brought him to decompress. The finder filed a found report with the city shelter and scanned for a chip.
No owners have come forward looking for him.

The finder named him Carlton. He had some blood and scrapes on his face when found. He was quite shutdown and needed some time before they figured out his personality. Despite being terrified and in pain, he approached cautiously for pets. He allowed to be bathed to get the blood and ungodly stink off.

Carlton is about 2 years old and weighs 58 lbs. He is so handsome! He has one blue eye and one brown eye. He is a brown merle pitbull terrier.

It turns out Carlton to be a sweet fella. He likes playing in the yard and chewing on his toys. He loves being round other dogs, walks well on the leash.

Carlton is crate-trained and mostly house-trained. He just was neutered and initially would mark, but with training and paying attention, he should do fine.

Carlton has come such a long way and is now ready for his loving forever home.
We recommend a home with older children. He has been fine around the kids at the finder's home, but can get excited and knock them down.

Please let me know if you are interested in meeting this handsome fella, and I will put you in contact with the finder.

I picked up Carbon at BARCS for a Dog's Day Out.
He is available for adoption through BARCS in Baltimore, MD.

We had so much fun going for a walk at Banneker Park in Catonsville, afterwards got some yummy soft-serve ice cream at Opie's. And boy was that good!
Later we went shopping at Lowe's where he met a lot of people and he was amazing with all. Someone even took some photos of him to send to his wife because he is just so sweet.

Carbon makes the most awesome companion to anyone, no matter how active or not. He likes the outdoors and enjoys his walks and hikes, but I can see him enjoying cuddling up with his humans on the couch and really loving it. He could be a couch potato and a snuggle bug.

Before I took him back to BARCS, we stopped at Checker's and got a yummy double cheeseburger. He was so beat and snored on the way back to the shelter. I really hated taking him back and wish I could keep this handsome fella.

If you can, even for a few hours, pick up a pup for the afternoon and make a difference in his life. It means the world to them and it gets the closer to find their loving forever home, they so much deserve.

Here is more information about Carbon on BARCS website:
Meet Carbon (a.k.a. Greece Chilly Sawyer)!

Carbon came to us through no fault of his own and is ready for a fresh start. This active, loyal pup is described as friendly with people and loves spending time outdoors - whether it's running, hiking, or just enjoying the fresh air. He is always happy to meet new people.

Carbon is housebroken, crate-trained, and knows some basic commands.

Carbon is a medium-sized, 42 pound friendly boy with a zest for life and a tail that never stops wagging. He's enthusiastic about his walks and is currently working on his leash manners-he's making great progress and just needs a little more practice.

Carbon is very responsive, especially when treats are involved, and he's this close to mastering "sit"! This smart pup loves hopping up on agility platforms and would thrive with an adopter who enjoys engaging with their dog.

Carbon has become a favorite on BARCS' Dog's Day Out program, and it's easy to see why-this sweet, curious, and affectionate boy makes every outing special. Whether he's zooming around the park, relaxing under a shady bench, or soaking in the sights of Fells Point and the Inner Harbor, Carbon is always all in. He's smart, observant, and endlessly loving. During his adventures, Carbon has visited snowball stands, enjoyed ice cream, watched ducks and geese with quiet curiosity, and walked calmly through busy areas-even around small children, he remained polite and well-mannered. He loves car rides, waits patiently when asked, and quickly settles in for cuddles or a shared treat with his human friends.

Carbon has an affectionate side that shines in quiet moments-he's known for his sweet hugs and lap-dog dreams. After playing with toys or exploring hiking trails, he's just as happy to stretch out in the grass and soak up the love. He listens well, adjusts to leash cues quickly, and always keeps his focus on his people.

The fun with Carbon continues! This lovable guy recently went on another Dogs Day Out-making stops at Starbucks (where he happily devoured a pup cup, of course) and Petco, before hitting the trails for a hike. Carbon showed off his great people skills, greeting everyone with his signature charm. On the hike, he was full of personality-playing in the mud, making his volunteer laugh, and hiking like a total pro! He was described as a funny, affectionate pup with endless love to give. He also shows great potential for training-smart, eager, and ready to please. Whether it's outdoor adventures or quality time with his people, Carbon is all in.

Carbon does loosen up over time, but can be selective with his friends. He prefers the ladies over the boys and would need to meet any doggie roommates to make sure they are a good match.
Described by volunteers as lovable, energetic, and deeply loyal.

Carbon is ready to find a forever home where he can be both your adventure buddy and cuddle companion. Come meet him-you'll quickly see why everyone who spends time with Carbon falls in love! Come meet Carbon and see if he's the perfect fit for your life!

Update: adopted!

Wookiee is a 6-months old Shih Tzu mix puppy who weighs 15 lbs.

This handsome little fella was surrendered to a local shelter in terrible condition. He was just too much for his owner who lived in an apartment and didn't take the time to take Wookiee out often enough to house-train as a puppy. He wasn't worked with and didn't receive training. His coat was so heavily matted from head to paws. The shelter staff trimmed his body the best they could to give him some comfort from the mats that were pulling on his skin.

Wookiee is dog friendly, is fine with cats, loves the attention from all people including kids. He is a little firecracker to be reckon with. He is a bundle of energy an so much fun.
He loves fetching toys and bringing them back to you so you can toss them again for him to fetch.
He also just tosses the toys around on his own, chasing balls, chewing on chew toys.
He is great with leash manners. He is crate- and house-trained.
Update: adopted

This little guy is such a little love and cuddle bug. He is always game for some belly rubs and getting loved on. He is a true snuggle buddy.

Papi was found as a stray and brought to the shelter by the finder. His owner never came for him. We are not sure if that is true and we assume the finder was actually the owner who brought him in. Maybe they didn't expect all the work that comes with a puppy.

Papi is a 1-year old Pomsky (Pomeranian and Husky mix) who weighs 8 lbs. He is a fluffy little fella who will need regular brushing and grooming to keep his coat pretty.
He is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on vaccines. He is also on heartworm and flea/tick prevention.

Papi is a happy little guy who loves to play with toys, chew on chew toys, play with his best friend Pippet, go for walks and car rides, and most of all, he loves to snuggle with his humans.

Papi is crate-trained, house-trained, and walks well on the leash.

Here is Papi's video: https://youtu.be/IBNECmQvkRY

Papi and Pippet are a bonded pair and will only be adopted together.

adopted

Pippet came all the way from Kuwait where she was abandoned in the streets by her owners as a puppy.

Pippet was adopted through another rescue where she lived for 6 years. Unfortunately, Pippet may suffer from PTSD caused by lots of tragic events. She would mutilate herself that we think may have been caused by stress and anxiety. The owner surrendered Pippet to our rescue.

Pippet has been doing so well at her foster home where she has lived for 2 months. She and Pomsky (Pomeranian and Husky mix) Papi have become friends and are inseparable. Papi gives her great comfort, they play together, nap together, enjoy walks and car rides together. Because of that, Pippet and Papi will only be adopted together.

Here is Papi's video: https://youtu.be/IBNECmQvkRY
Pippet looks like a purebred West Highland Terrier, however she is a mixed breed. She is a little over 6 years old and weighs 22 lbs. She is spayed and micro-chipped, up to date on vaccines.

Pippet is house-trained. She has never needed to be crated. She would do best in a home where someone is home most of the day. When she is left alone, her foster mom puts on a donut cone to make sure she doesn't mutilate herself when left without her human. She may be fine once she settles again in a new home.
She is a sweetheart, very affectionate and lovable.

Here is Pippet's video: https://youtu.be/ghWM5XjixMY

This little fella was surrendered to a local shelter in terrible condition. He was just too much for his owner who lived in an apartment and didn't take the time to take Wookiee out often enough to house-train as a puppy. He wasn't worked with and received no training. Update: adopted!

Milo got his own video!

Milo is an owner surrender. His owner just had a baby and could no longer provide sufficient care for him. Instead of turning Milo into the overcrowded shelter system, she asked for help to get him into rescue so he can find a new loving home.

Milo used to be kept crated for over 12 hours during the day, and then also at night, which caused him to suffer a bit from separation anxiety.

Milo is 3 1/2 years old and weighs 17 lbs. He is a Jack Russell Terrier and Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. He is neutered and up to date on vaccines, heartworm and flea and tick preventatives. He is also microchipped.
He is crate- and house-trained.

Milo is good with other dogs, is people friendly, also does well around respectful kids.
He loves going for walkies, car rides, playing with his toys and other dogs. He also likes to snuggle with his humans.
He would do best in a home where someone is home most of the day.
