I met this OTTB for his first trim and he exceeded expectations for sweetness and outstanding behavior. He’s right on par with my Madhu! 🦄 I am grateful to trim such nice client horses!

Why we try to eliminate access to grass in a Paddock Paradise track system explained in one sentence. “There is more grass growing on this paper I use to write this report than could be found on 100 acres of their natural habitat.” - Dr. Ric Redden, DVM (equine vet)

Accepting a few barefoot horses that stand well for hoof care in the Kingsville, Perry Hall, White Marsh, and Glen Arm areas of Maryland. I keep horses on a 4-6 week trim cycle.

I am interested in the holistic health of your horse, and am here to support horses to grow the healthiest hooves possible by addressing the trim, the diet, lifestyle, and horsemanship.

A great trim is not necessarily defined by how the hoof looks when the trimmer is finished but by the hoof that emerges over time as a result of the trim, the lifestyle/environment, the diet and, if applicable, the manner in which the horse is ridden.

The ISNHCP uses the wild, free-roaming horses in the U.S. Great Basin as its model. Jaime Jackson gathered on these healthy, sound, and fit horses over a four-year period in the early/mid-1980's. The natural trim emerged as a result of his research and, like all good science, can be replicated by all who learn it. The educated trimmer mimics the natural wear patterns of healthy horses living in this adaptive biome, which stimulates natural growth patterns. This same hoof could just as easily be thrown into chaos by the uneducated trimmer.

The First Guiding Principle of the Natural Trim: Leave that which naturally should be there.

“In 2010, 28 years after I entered wild horse country, I was able to experiment with a new approach to frog trimming. This occurred in a Paddock Paradise … where the terrain closely approximated that of the arid Great Basin, home to America’s wild, free-roaming horses. To make a long story short, neither the soles nor the frogs required trimming….

“It was impossible to trim them without causing harm. They were fully armored ip, and any attempt to strip away the epidermal layers would simply result in hypersensitivity. I had come to appreciate that the naturally shaped hoof has both a hard sole plane and a hard frog plane.

“With toe lengths under 3 inches, these hooves answered the question I had posed back in 1982 when I first observed wild horses moving pain-free over the most difficult ground imaginable: How is it possible that these animals can do so with such short hooves? The answer, decades in the coming, was … defiantly simple: a genuine, naturally shaped hoof!” - The Natural Horse: Lessons from the Wild, 2020 edition, by Jaime Jackson.

It's not just about the track...

Jaime Jackson's concept 'Paddock Paradise' track systems is just one of the 4 pillars of natural horse care. Each pillar is vital to the health and wellbeing of the horse, and directly affects the others.

1. Reasonably Natural Diet

Providing a diet that is near to natural or species appropriate as possible, with free access tohay and various bushes, trees and herbs.Avoids feeding forage, grass or feed that is inflammatory or unnatural.

2. Natural Boarding (paddock paradise)

To understand the nature of equines and provide them with a mixed herd to encourage natural social behaviours and dynamics. There are no use of paddocks, or stabling, isolation and limited turnout.

3. Natural Hoof Care

The Natural Trim is defined as the humane mimicking of natural wear patterns - to understandwhat a natural hoof is and trimming to replicate what nature would take and what nature would leave.

4. Natural Horsemanship

Natural schooling, ridden work and ground work is based on what movements are natural to the horse; nothing is forced.

If you're not getting the result you want, or your horses still struggle with a environmental, dietary or hoof care related issue, you may need to revaluate and check you're including the 4 pillars of natural horse care into your management.

Where can you find out more?

Reasonably Natural Diet: The AANHCP offers guidelines on diet and feeding for a small donation to their non-profit advocacy organisation.

Natural Horse Boarding: ‘Paddock Paradise’ by Jaime Jackson can be found on most online bookstores, exploring a revolutionary model for safe, natural horse keeping, hoof care, and the healing and rehabilitation of lame horses. ‘This unique and unprecedented model is adaptable to virtually all size horse properties, regardless of climate, and fits all equine breeds regardless of how they are used'.

Natural Hoof Care: The Natural Trim was created by former farrier Jaime Jackson as a result of his four-year study on the hooves of the Great Basin wild horses and a subsequent large clientele of domesticated horses, the Natural Trim is taught through his training program, Isnhcp - Institute for the Study of Natural Horse Care Practices.
