So here I sit blow drying a duck.. yea not all your friends are like “nah I can’t meet up I got a duck to blow” - my friends don’t even think twice 🤣

Back to the duck.. everyone is getting ramped up for deer season, myself included.. but the taxidermy shop runs a bit behind the hunt seasons - it’s the nature of the game.. so here it is September and I’m washing ducks. And blowing ducks🤣

And just like deer, ducks or anything else for that matter, a good mount starts the moment you put that animal on the ground. You have to take care with the cape (or feathers) while you still have it, so that I can make it look good to give back to you! This means getting mammals off the carcass and the cape as cold as possible as fast as possible. For birds, it’s getting the feathers going in the right direction and properly bagging it and getting it as cold as possible as fast as possible. You guys see a theme here?

So next time you have a trophy think - how fast can I get this thing properly cooled down?! Help me make your trophy look as good as possible!

Now onto my next thought.. deer are cool.. but birds are so pretty!!! Blue, green, purple!! Gah!! I love them!!

Alrighty.. by popular demand I’m going to give it a shot! Got my form in from Matuska Taxidermy Supply who made my day with a banana laffy taffy - my favorite!!

One of my hunters dropped off a bobcat just for a tanned pelt as “a conversation piece at the cabin”. Well I asked if i could pelt it with a taxidermy head similar to a rug and he graciously agreed. I told him no guarantees and that the conversation about it might be mostly pointing and laughing - he still gave the go ahead!

Stay tuned to see how much of a conversation we’ll be having about this conversation piece!

26/27 hunting licenses are on sale now! New ID requirements to ensure that Texas resident licenses are issued to actual Texas residents are in effect! Also it’s your responsibility to know the laws in the county you are hunting in! Easy to check the app and make sure you’re doing right! Our local game wardens are pretty cool guys, but they don’t mess around!

She’s been asking about her mount for awhile now, dad has been explaining that taxidermy takes time, never count on less than a year turn around..

Well dad got to surprise his girl by bringing home her trophy tonight as a surprise!

I’m just stopping to admire and appreciate the work done by this hunter! Tube caped.. minimal holes.. over 48 inches of deer to work with!

I’m going to need this guy to go around the county any do clinics on how to properly cape a deer!

Be still my taxidermist heart😍 When you bring me a beauty like this- you want a shoulder mount.. sure… you want a wall pedestal… sure.. you want a floor pedestal..no problem.. you want a half mount - well you should leave the front legs…

Another beautiful day here in NE TX and another beautiful buck ready for the house!

The 25/26 deer season really let Red River County show up and show out!! This guy was harvested only about 5 miles down the road!

What in the Buffalo Bill & Ed Gein club have I gotten into?! Had a art project that I wanted buckskin for.. thought I can do that…

As a taxidermist when you feel this happening you know why it’s called bucking the hair off… because you’ll go “oh F*CKING no!!!” This is a horrible thing that can happen to improperly cared for hides during the tanning process. Here I did it on purpose - and honestly my blood pressure still went up when I felt that first handful of hair slip right off the hide!! After that it was oddly satisfying to pull it all off.

But I was not prepared for the weird human skin like appearance of what I ended up with once done. Now into the acid pickle for a few days.. then it gets neutralized and tanned… time will tell I did it right or not.
