Happy Friday! We made it to the weekend! ☀️🎉

We’ve got some exciting new arrivals to share from Oakhurst Guinea Pig Rescue!

This morning, a local vet reached out after discovering a box of guinea pigs left at their front door. Thanks to their quick action, all three little piggies are now safe and sound with us, and we’re thrilled to introduce them to you!

Please give a warm welcome to Petal, a sweet young lady around three months old, and her adorable sidekicks, Frodo and Sam, a precious pair of baby brothers who are maybe a month old! 🐹🐹🐹

Petal is a little underweight, but the great news is that everyone appears to be healthy and doing well. She’ll be placed on pregnancy watch as a precaution since we don’t know her background. Frodo and Sam should be ready for adoption after their standard two-week hold and wellness check!

🌟 Quick PSA: While it might seem like leaving animals at a vet’s office is a safe solution, it can actually be incredibly risky. During extreme heat, animals left outside even for a short time can suffer from heatstroke. We had heavy rain here in Atlanta tonight, and in situations like that, the plastic tubs they are in can quickly fill with water, creating a tragic hazard. Most importantly, if animals are left without anyone being alerted, they may go unnoticed for hours, especially if placed in an area that staff do not check regularly. Sadly, we’ve seen these heartbreaking situations before and just want to spread awareness to help keep animals safe.

We’re so thankful these three were found in time and are already settling in nicely. If your family is looking to add two sweet baby boys to your life, Frodo and Sam could be the perfect match and ready in about two weeks! 💕

🎉🐹 Happy Guinea Pig Appreciation Day! 🎉🐹

Today’s the perfect day to introduce one of our newest rescue stars, Sparkles!

Last month, a kindhearted Good Samaritan found a guinea pig abandoned in a box on a sweltering day. With temps in the high 90s and no food or water, Sparkles was weak, thin, and barely able to walk.

We rushed her to OGPR that night and started emergency care. After consulting Dr. Ahearn, we gave her subcutaneous fluids. Her dehydration was so severe we could barely tent her skin. We started Metoclopramide to help her GI system and began syringe-feeding her high-calorie EmerAid IC.

Even though she was fragile, Sparkles had this determined sparkle in her eyes, like she wasn’t ready to give up. 💪🐹

The next morning? Tiny p**ps in her ICU cage! (Yes, that’s huge in rescue!) Soon, she was nibbling hay and veggies. Her legs were stiff and splayed, likely from scurvy, so with our vet, we started oral and subcutaneous vitamin C therapy.

In just a few weeks, she made amazing progress. Her walking steadily improved, and we slowly tapered off vitamin C. With her mobility back, Sparkles graduated to one of our sanctuary groups, a gentle herd of older ladies. Shy at first, she soon found her zoomies and started wheeking at dinnertime like a pro! 🐹

She still has healing and weight to gain, but Sparkles is thriving. We’re so proud of how far she’s come and so thankful she got her second chance.🐹🎉🎊💙❤💙

Tonight, we’re excited to introduce one of our newest arrivals! One thing about animal rescue is that we rarely have to embellish a story. In fact, we often have to tone it down just so it doesn’t sound too unbelievable.

Earlier this week, we were contacted by a small rescue in Greenville, South Carolina. They had taken in a little guinea pig after her previous owner lost custody through a local police case. Since this rescue doesn’t typically handle small animals, they reached out to us, knowing she would be better off with a group experienced in guinea pig care.

Thanks to a wonderful animal transport group, we coordinated her journey and met up in Athens on Tuesday while we were there for a vet visit.

Please give a warm welcome to Piggie Smalls from South Carolina! We didn’t name her, but we fully support the title of Notorious PIG. She’s already proving to be a sweetheart and has quickly bonded with Gwinnie, who joined us just a couple of weeks ago.

Happy 4th of July from Mojo! 🎆✨🐹

Hi, it’s me, Mojo! I’m a two-year-old lady who was rescued from Cobb Animal Services, and I’m celebrating my very first Independence Day with my amazing new friends at Oakhurst Guinea Pig Rescue! 💙❤️🤍

I’m still a little shy (it’s hard not to be after all I’ve been through), but I’m starting to come out of my shell. I’ve been spending my days lounging with some of the older sanctuary ladies and enjoying lots of hay and healthy veggies (they say I was a bit too fluffy when I arrived 😅)

I’m not quite ready for adoption yet, but hopefully soon I’ll find a forever home with another piggy friend who’s looking for a buddy like me!

We hope your week is off to a great start! Tonight we have a story to share that’s almost too incredible to believe.

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by a family who had spotted a guinea pig near a parking lot they visited often. After patiently working to catch him for nearly a week, they finally succeeded and made the long drive, over an hour, to bring him to us. We named him Tater Tot. Despite his time outdoors, he was in decent condition, just a little underweight from the ordeal.

But the story didn’t end there.

About a week later, the same family reached out again. They had spotted another guinea pig in the exact same spot. Once again, they managed to safely catch him and made the same one-hour trip to bring him to us. This little one, now named Nugget, was also in fairly good health but noticeably more underweight.

When we introduced the two boys, something remarkable happened. There was no rumbling, no dominance displays, none of the typical behavior we usually see during introductions. It was as if they already knew each other. We truly believe these two may have been companions before their time outside.

Tater Tot and Nugget are now safe, thriving, and gaining weight. They’ll be ready for adoption soon and will stay together, because some bonds are meant to be. 💛🐹🐹

Happy Saturday!

Today, we welcomed another little girl into our care, Gwinnie. She was at DeKalb County Lifeline, and just like Clementine, she had been left behind in an apartment when her family moved out. Once her stray hold was up, we made sure she had a safe place to land.

Gwinnie is a sweet young American tricolor, about four to five months old. She is quite skittish right now and still adjusting to her new surroundings, but we are hopeful that with a few days alongside our gentle sanctuary ladies, she will start to settle in and feel more comfortable.

Because we do not know much about her past, we will be keeping her with us for about four weeks. This will give her time to put on a little weight and enjoy a healthy diet before she is ready for her forever home. We are so glad she is here, and we cannot wait to see her blossom. 🐹❤🎊🎉🎊🎉

Happy Friday!

Tonight, we are excited to introduce one of our newest rescues. Please help us welcome Clementine! 🐹🍊

Last week, OGPR rescued seven guinea pigs from Cobb Animal Services. While in the exotics room, I noticed a little orange piggie sitting alone in a cage. I asked if we could take her too. They explained that she had been left behind in an apartment when her family moved out. Because she was considered a stray, they had to keep her until the stray hold period was over.

I offered to foster her during the hold, and they agreed. After finishing the paperwork, we left the shelter with eight piggies instead of seven.

Today her hold period ended, and she officially became an OGPR piggie. She is the sweetest little lady with an incredibly loud wheek that makes everyone smile. She has been spending time with some of our older sanctuary ladies and is very happy.

Since we are not sure about her past, we will keep her with us for about four more weeks to watch her closely and help her gain weight with a healthy diet. We are so happy to have her with us and cannot wait to find her a loving forever home. 🐹🍊🎊🎉🎊❤❤❤

Last week, Oakhurst Guinea Pig Rescue received a message from a woman who had just discovered a sick guinea pig left outside alone. She had done everything she could. She contacted her county animal control, called nearby veterinary offices, and searched everywhere for help. Unfortunately, no one was willing to help.

That’s when she reached out to us.

Even with more than 120 guinea pigs currently in our care, spread across over 20 foster homes, and managed by just four main volunteers who also work full-time jobs, we immediately began working to coordinate a pickup and bring the little one to safety.

Tragically, he passed away before we could get there.

The woman who found him was heartbroken but incredibly kind. She thanked us for trying and planted a flower in his memory, a simple, beautiful tribute to a life that mattered.

We share this story not to focus on the sadness or place blame, but to give an honest look at what rescue often looks like behind the scenes. Every day, our inbox fills with surrender requests, urgent situations, and pleas for help. We do our best to respond compassionately because every guinea pig matters.

To the families waiting for help, please know from the bottom of our hearts that we truly hear you. We care deeply about each of you and are doing everything possible to reach everyone who needs us. Please don’t ever hesitate to keep reaching out. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding as our small but devoted team pours their hearts into this work daily.

To our amazing volunteers and fosters, you are the heart of Oakhurst. You care for the piggies, you celebrate their adoptions, and you grieve with us when we lose one. This rescue would not be possible without your love and commitment. Your compassion and kindness bring hope to this work; we are so thankful for each of you.

We often share the joyful side of rescue—the happy endings, the new beginnings, and the popcorning. But sometimes, we must take a moment to honor the little ones we couldn’t save, not with guilt but grace.

We hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! As usual, we’re a little behind on posting, but last weekend was a big one for adoptions at OGPR!

First up, the fabulous duo Zoey and Luna found their forever home with a longtime adopter and supporter of the rescue. We’re thrilled for these sweet girls!

Next was a heartwarming bond between our girl Cookie, who’s been with us for about a year, and little Pearl, around 3 years old. They hit it off beautifully, and we couldn’t be happier for them!

Finally, a special shoutout to Sarsaparilla and Sprinkles! These adorable boomerang boys were previously adopted and returned, but this time, they found the forever home they truly deserve.

We had a wonderful adoption day last Sunday—two of our piggies found their forever home! We're thrilled to share that Bugs and Wile E. have been adopted! These sweet boys were originally surrendered to another rescue before making their way to OGPR, and we're so happy to see them off to a loving new family. It was a fantastic day, and we’re looking forward to many more like it! ❤🎊🎊🎉🎉🎊🎉🐹🐹❤

Today, we’re excited to introduce two of the newest members of the OGPR family—please give a warm welcome to Boris and Collin!

These two adorable little Abyssinians were found abandoned on the doorstep of a local animal control shelter. Thankfully, they’re in great health and estimated to be around 6–7 months old.

What’s even more amazing? They’re incredibly sweet and much less skittish than we expected!
