My last two ruffed grouse hunters for 2025 were Darryl and Karson, two of the nicest, most down-to-earth people that you’ll ever meet, and their setter, “Belle.”

I met Darryl and his wife Bonda at the Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society Grouse Camp in Eagle River, Wisconsin and we hit it off so well that they decided to book with us at Superior Upland for another shot at the king of the uplands.

Belle turned out to be an absolute rock star on grouse, possibly the best bird dog I’ve ever seen. She pointed, relocated, tracked, and pinned a ton of birds during their trip.

Over three days we put Darryl and Karson on almost 60 ruffed grouse and over 20 woodcock. They went home with three grouse and a doodle. Anyone who knows ruffed grouse will tell you that those are pretty darn good numbers when you’re hunting cagey birds.

Thanks to all of my hunters this year. Thanks for sharing your hunts with me. You made my October truly memorable. You were fun, safe, responsible, and good stewards of the hunting community.

We’ll spend the rest of our fall and early winter chasing pheasants, sharptail, and quail, but we’ll always have our favorite ruffed grouse on our minds, and we’re looking forward to big things in 2026!

I propose a new calendar: not one autumn but twelve, a hundred. The autumn when the birches are yellow but still have their leaves; when the beeches are green but the birch leaves have fallen; when the oaks tint to the color of ripe apricots and the beeches yellow; when the oaks turn a cigar brown and the beeches curl up into crispy copper rolls. And so on: I’ve missed a few. But to call it all just “autumn”. -Daniel Mason
