How do I get my horse to stop pacing and rushing? Riders are told to hold on (shorten the reins) and push the horse until it becomes smooth but this does not work. It only creates a horse heavy on the hands, creates tension, bracing and compression BUT smoothness is enough to fool most people into thinking the horse is correct.

Always ask yourself, What’s in it for the horse?

If we were held to the same standards that we expect from our equine partners, we too would likely exhibit undesirable behaviors and frequently fall short of expectations. We owe it to them to demonstrate understanding and provide the same level of empathy and compassion that we would desire for ourselves. I think they will thank us for it 🤠

To achieve true bending from nose to tail, the horse must understand how to move away from lateral leg pressure, comprehend the connecting outside rein, and recognize the aids to inside flexion.

If you are using a spur while executing lateral movements, is your horse truly moving in response to the leg or simply reacting to the spur by avoiding it? Reacting to the spur with physical tension defeats the purpose of the maneuver. In all things we do, the goal is to shift the horse from using its survival-driven "reactive brain" to its problem-solving "thinking brain".

Just completed a third clinic with our horse family in Naples, FL. All I can say is you guys are AWESOME. We saw so much growth from last year and could not be more proud of these ladies. Dinner with dancing and singing, great conversation, and loads of fun made our last clinic of the year one to definitely remember. Thank you, Michelle, for all you do for us and for your students! Can’t wait to see you guys again next December ❤️

Horses require consistency and clarity, which can only be achieved through accountability. It is essential to be mindful of our actions, reactions, and application when working with our equine partners. This awareness will enhance our communication and foster a stronger relationship. Your horse will thank you for it 🤠

Why am I struggling to canter my gaited horse? Chances are your horse is on the forehand. Commonly, gaited horses are ridden on the forehand with their hindquarters tracking out behind in pursuit of smoothness rather than focusing on correct engagement and development. This lack of engagement means the horse cannot generate the necessary impulsion and power needed, creating significant challenges with cantering. Correct development is crucial in all aspects of horse training for the horse's well-being! If you would like to learn more, join us for a clinic in 2026🤠
