National Rescue Dog Day is observed annually on May 20 to bring awareness about all the dogs who live in shelters and rescues as they wait for their furever families to adopt them.

I want to feature my own rescue pooch, Aspen, today. I didn't adopt her from a shelter, but instead, I found her as a puppy wandering in the middle of the road in my North Georgia mountains in December 2022. She was part of a litter that had been dumped in the woods. All the shelters in my area were full at the time, so my husband and I made the decision to make Aspen part of our family. I consider her a "special situation" rescue. Aspen brings Garland and me such joy, and she is a doting little sister to her big brother, Atlas, whom we adopted from our local Humane Society.

If you have a rescue dog in your life, then you are one lucky pet parent! If you don't have a rescue dog in your life, consider adopting a canine companion from your local animal shelter or rescue. If you aren't able to adopt, you can help dogs who currently reside in shelters by volunteering your time or by donating supplies or money to a shelter near you. You will get two paws up from shelter dogs across the country for your love and generosity.

Wednesday, April 30, is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! Life changed for the better for Garland and me on June 16, 2020, when we officially adopted Atlas from the Humane Society of Blue Ridge. We first fostered Atlas for six months while he was going through heartworm treatment. When he got the all clear from the vet, I immediately drove to HSBR to sign the paperwork to make Atlas a Duvall dog! Adding Atlas to our family was the most pawsome decision ever! Atlas brings us so much joy every single day.

If you have adopted a shelter pet, Goin' to the Dogs gives you two paws up! If you are looking for a pet companion, please visit your local animal shelter to find the dog or cat of your dreams. You will be glad you did! If you aren't able to adopt a shelter pet, you can still make a difference by volunteering at your local shelter or by donating money or pet supplies for the dogs and cats who are waiting for their furever homes.
