You’ve completed the extraction… then you take the radiograph.
A retained root fragment is visible—and it’s sitting close to the orbit.

Would you go after it, or leave it?

Luxators and elevators are not the same—and knowing the difference can make extractions smoother. 🦷

Luxators are designed to help break down the periodontal ligament. Elevators are used to elevate the tooth out. Hybrid instruments can do both, but technique still matters.

The biggest mistake? Getting impatient.
Sustained, controlled pressure—sometimes for much longer than 15 seconds—can make the difference between a frustrating extraction and a successful one.

Save this for your next dental procedure.

The bigger the root… the longer you hold pressure. 🦷
Dr. Brett Beckman shares one of the most important principles for difficult extractions—especially in the mandible.

One of the most common mistakes during extraction is letting up too soon.
When pressure is released too early, the bone and periodontal ligament rebound toward the tooth—meaning you lose the movement you’ve created.

For larger roots, longer sustained pressure can make a major difference in mobility, efficiency, and extraction success.

Think of the maxillary canine like a banana 🍌🦷

This week on The Vet Dental Show, Dr. Brett Beckman shares one of the simplest ways to visualize how much bone to remove during a surgical extraction.

Understanding how far around the root to go can make elevation easier, improve exposure, and help extractions feel more predictable in practice.

Sometimes one visual analogy can completely change the way you approach a procedure.

How are you confirming retained roots in these cases?

This week’s episode of The Vet Dental Show discusses one of the most overlooked keys to easier dental extractions: patience. 🦷

Especially with larger roots and mandibular extractions:
the bigger the root, the longer you hold pressure.

One small adjustment can make a huge difference in tooth movement, extraction efficiency, and overall success.
