Update Time!
Meet Leo. He is a Newfoundland Poodle cross.
I was hired by his humans when he bagan displaying territorial, protective, stubborn, shy and sometimes aggressive behavior.
I taught them that Leo's primary breed was coming through, the ever loyal but innately guarded Newfoundland.
I explained that because he is crossed with a poodle, many many of these cross breeds are being miss-understood because people don't know that they are guardian breeds. They will more likely present territorial/protective behavior than any other characteristic.
***I have had this experience with numerous dogs as "mix it with a poodle" is becoming more and more popular***
That is a whole post on its own I'll do some day.
So....what did we do with Leo???
The family worked very hard for many months learning to display their dominance in a healthy way to Leo and creating an environment that he felt safe in and not feeling like HE had to protect. I also taught the family how to socialize Leo and get him the proper exercise and sleep for his breed. Today, Leo is much more relaxed and able to cope with life as a guardian breed in the right ways.
