Seems like just yesterday I was running this nine month old chocolate bullet with a six month old Banks in a carrier with me. It has been an absolute honor to build this machine of a chocolate dog. He taught me so much- 1. Once a dog of his caliber learns to love retrieving- STEADY him… 2. You want a dog that knows almost everything and doesn’t think he needs your help to listen, challenge the mess out of him… Mix it up… be unpredictable so he realizes you might know a bit more and maybe he should actually listen to you… 3. Don’t be so excited to run a dog like this too soon.. it’ll backfire- they will learn the game 4. Read the books and use reverse psychology and 5. It will all be worth it in the end
I picked Basil out for Amanda and Ben and went to work. He has always been too smart for his own good- but truly amazing. He hunted ALOT all three of his first seasons- We trained during the week and he went home to be their baby on the weekends. On Mondays… he was so excited to be back.. he probably didn’t even get to get his marks— 🤪 but a dog like him didn’t need to get his marks- he already knew where they were and needed to learn he wasn’t in controlol.
Honored to get to handle him to his Hunting Retriever Champion title… but even more honored to have been able to provide Ben and Amanda with so much joy in their life.
Other dogs with big passes are Binx and Lilly!
We love this game… I love setting goals… I don’t take for granted the opportunity to do something I love.
