We’re back with another weekly education session so let’s hop into it!
German Shepherd Dogs(GSD) originate from 19th century German herding dogs that varied depending on the region of Germany in which they lived. Eventually these German herding dogs were bred using the different strains found throughout Germany in order to develop the “ideal” herding dog.
Over time, the GSD that we know and love today was developed, but they were still used as herding dogs. As the need for the use of herding dogs began to diminish over time, the role of this amazing breed shifted with the help of a few famous GSDs who played roles on movies at the time. Now, we commonly see them used as working dogs in-law police and military dogs!
Personality:
GSD are very loyal and hard working dogs who are amazing, gentle family pets. They will go above and beyond for their humans which makes them incredible guard dogs. They are extremely intelligent, energetic, agile, and fast which makes them great for sports.
🐾Exercise:
These athletic creatures require a great amount of exercise to help promote both physical and mental stimulation. A GSD who is not properly exercised and mentally stimulated may develop undesirable behaviors (I.e. aggression)
🐾Training:
GSD are one the easier breeds to train as they are very intelligent and willing to please. Early socialization and puppy training followed up with regular obedience training are essential for this breed to help keep them on track and out of trouble😊
