To my clients, We often say, your new dog will be learning both from you (the humans) and from the current dog in the home. Dogs love to learn from other dogs, and will watch one another to learn “how to dog” especially when they are young. If you’re getting a second dog, ask yourself these questions in prep:

What behaviors does my current dog do that I do not want to pass on to my puppy?

What is my current dog afraid of that might teach my puppy to be unnecessarily afraid?

What struggles might my current dog have with integrating a puppy?

What will I do if I want to separate my puppy from my current dog? Does my current dog have the skill set to settle in a crate, behind a gate or in a room on their own?

HAPPY EASTER!

We got put a new class in your easter basket! Starting Tuesday 4/29 we are offering Dogs 301, which is a prep class for the Canine Good Citizen test.

The Canine Good Citizen Program was created by the AKC. It’s a useful set of skills for dogs to be polite and responsible members of society. Skills include things like allowing a friendly stranger to pet them, or walking through a crowd.

Even if your dog isn’t ready to pass, it’s a great class for them to learn skills and work their way towards that goal!

* When: Tuesdays weekly from 6:30pm - 7:30pm starting April 29th 2025
* Where: Mason Mill Recreation Center, 1340 McConnell Dr, Decatur, GA
* How much: $199 for 5 weeks - 4 weeks of classes + week 5 test/practice test

Opie was found by the parent of a client of ours! He was on the side of the road in Valdosta with a wounded leg. She has been fostering him, house training him, and just had him neutered! He’s estimated to be about one, and loves people. His behavior with dogs is not known, but he doesn’t like cats or chickens which are unfortunately plentiful at his foster home! He does love donkeys though so it may be a small animal thing!

If you know of someone who can foster or adopt, please reach out! He’s a sweet potato!

Getting two pets to be friends let alone tolerate one another isn’t as easy as many people hope - even if they are the same age and enter the home at the same time. But this client is putting in the work 💪 and is off to a heartwarming start 😍. With training for all parties and careful management, these two are adorable playmates.

They are both 5 months old and Oberon (🐱) is likely to be nearly twice as big as Mabel (🐶) as an adult.

Toot toot it’s the Testimonial train 🚂! We’ve decided to start sharing some of the client emails and reviews that get us through the tough days. Not just because we want to toot our own horn (which we do because it’s positive reinforcement ☺️)

But more importantly, it gives you an insight into the type of work we do and the results we are looking for! Sometimes behavior modification and training are hard to picture. But dogs like Junie and her mom are a great example of the changes training can make to quality of life for humans and pets 🐶🐱
P.S I downloaded a cartoonify app so this gives me an excuse to use it on our clients 🤣

Share the love! 💕 We are always asked for recommendations for pet professionals and they are a hot commodity! As everyone knows, it’s not a one size fits all, so the more options we have, the more able we are to find the right match for location and needs of our client. On Thursday the animal behavior community lost Karen Pryor. She wrote “Don’t Shoot the Dog: The New Art of Teaching and Training” which brought positive reinforcement and clicker training into the hands out household trainers. It’s probably the #1 most recommended book to read if you’re interested in training. She also started the Karen Pryor Academy (KPA) to teach novices and professionals to clicker train.

If you’re browsing trainers and you see KPA on their bio, that’s a good cue that they are positive reinforcement trainer. While Amy and I haven’t been that specific program yet, it’s one we certainly acknowledge and look for when evaluating suitable referrals.

If your goals for 2025 include learning more about training or communicating with your own dog, give it. Read! I included a photo excerpt from the book so you can see how well written and easy to understand it is!

Jk this pup is actually just so focused on his training he is unphased by his leash eye patch. He’s practicing different place/tether set ups so he’s ready for Christmas Guests!

Sometimes a red flag 🚩 is actually a green flag 💚 !

These neighbors use flags to let each other know when their dogs are in the backyard.
🐶🐶🐶🏡🏡🐶🐶
They both have dogs who likes to run along and bark at one another through the fence.

They are both working with us on reducing this behavior. In the meantime, the flags help them prevent the dogs from rehearsing the behavior when they aren’t ready to train! If one neighbor sees the flag up on the other neighbor’s side, they’ll wait to bring their dogs out until the flag is removed!

It’s a small gesture that makes a huge difference!
