Rusty is the big boy of Ruth and Boaz's January 2026 litter. He's quite the lover doggie and is very happy here, and is ready for a family of his own. So if you want to have a video visit with Rusty, call Bret at 678-570-2195. A long hair dachshund, Rusty has a red coat that is beginning to show a little bit of black shading. He has the brown nose and will be what is currently called a tweenie, which is a miniature dachshund who grows a little bigger than the show dog miniature parameters. I do not believe he will be a full size dachshund, but I'm just making a guess at his mature size. He's currently a little over 5 lb., projected to be between 14 and 16 lb., more or less, at maturity, so still a small dog in the canine world.

Dachshunds are very smart animals; stubborn, but trainable, if you are consistent. When you open a door, a dog who dashes thru the open space is a danger to himself and you. Puppies will need to be trained before they are a year old to wait until their name is spoken and they are given another word like "enter" or "come in" or "go." If you have multiple pets, be sure each animal waits until his own name is spoken, along with the passage word you have chosen, before moving thru the doorway. Details, such as whether the dog is going to pass thru first, or you will, are part of your training plan for your dog. I wouldn't expect such training to be useful until about 6 months of age, but I'd be real interested in seeing comments from puppy/dog owners on their experience. Safe passage!

Forgive my poor camera work. My husband and several of my children are quite adept at creating quality video but I have failed to hone those skills . In this video you will see two shaded puppies that are already reserved, and Blondie and Rusty who are ready for new homes. Toward the end of the video you will see our sire Boaz who is pestering Coppertop, and then Ruth, the puppies' doggie mama

Another issue of very great importance for new puppy owners to consider, is the fact that a puppy has not had a full set of immunizations, and is therefore more vulnerable when exposed to contagious diseases. Our dachshunds are quite hardy, and we have had no infestations on our property, ever. But if you are traveling home with your new puppy, and you stop at the interstate rest area, and potty your puppy in the "dog walk" area, you've just exposed your new pup to a plethora of potentially dangerous pathogens, left behind by other dogs, who may or may not be carrying contagious diseases. As you walk in that area, you pick up the pathogens on the bottom of your shoes, and take it to your car and your home. Not good. Our puppies are small dogs, and you can always find a patch of grass somewhere, along your route, that is very unlikely to have been visited by other dogs. Keep your puppy dog safe from cars, as dachshunds love to travel in cars (at least once they find out how much cuddling is available during the ride, as well as new sights and smells--dachshunds are extremely curious about everything!), and therefore dachshunds are known to not be aware of the dangers which cars pose. Happy traveling with your new puppy, but plan to keep her safe! Oh, and don't forget that she needs to be offered water from time to time.

As I prepare Ruth and Boaz's litter of 6 puppies to go to their new homes, and spring--then summer--is upon us, I want to remind all puppy and dog owners that your beloved pet needs lots of fresh water available pretty much all the time. You might kennel a dog for a short time without water, but be sure to offer water just before kenneling your baby, and immediately when you come back. The kennel is a great training tool, but never forget that prolonged or repeated times in a kennel with no water is dangerous for your baby's kidneys and other functions. Water. Fresh and clean. The water bowl should be washed regularly with dish detergent, and rinsed very well. Has anyone had success using gerbil/small animal drip water dispensers in a kennel? I used them years ago, but I don't find myself kenneling dogs very often these days, so I don't have any ideas to share, just the idea itself.
