During our training session with Sadie, we focused on two important commands: Down and Watch!

While these commands may seem simple, they are powerful tools for teaching impulse control and focus. Sadie tends to get very excited around other dogs and distractions, so teaching her how to settle into a down position and maintain eye contact with her handler helps her learn to think before she reacts.

This lesson was all about teaching Sully the heel command!

Before training, Sully would pull so hard on walks that he’d hit the end of the leash and practically choke himself trying to get where he wanted to go. Since his owner loves taking him on walks through the greenway, learning to walk politely on a loose leash is a game changer for both of them.

Heel teaches Sully to stay focused and walk calmly beside his owner instead of dragging her down the trail. It also provides valuable mental stimulation, which helps wear him out and can reduce unwanted behaviors at home.

Today’s lesson with Sadie focused on learning heel!

Sadie loves adventures with her family, but her excitement often got the best of her. She would pull on the leash during walks and become overly excited whenever she saw other dogs. Since her owners have an active lifestyle and enjoy taking her everywhere with them, those behaviors can make outings stressful instead of enjoyable.

Heel teaches Sadie to focus on her handler and walk politely by their side, even when distractions are present. Instead of dragging her owners toward every exciting thing she sees, she’s learning that her job is to stay connected and engaged with them.

Place teaches Sully to go to a designated spot and remain there until released.
